Op-Ed What's missing when you hike the California backcountry? People of color

Last month, two friends and I backpacked for a week in the Sierra Nevada. We hiked through meadows dotted with wildflowers, slept beneath snow-draped peaks and met plenty of other hikers: the dad and son whose Green Bay Packers caps sparked a conversation about our mutual ties to Wisconsin; scientists from UC Santa Cruz studying flowers and rock formations; five recent college grads from Kentucky who were hiking the John Muir Trail before they scattered to begin their adult lives.

But as the days passed, I grew increasingly troubled by the people we didn’t meet. There were a few Asian hikers, including a couple of hapas like me (I’m half Japanese and half Polish) and one of my friends was half-Iranian, but not a single backpacker who was Latino or African American.

This near-total absence of people of color — which I’ve noticed on past trips as well — was particularly striking because it was such a contrast to my everyday life. I live and work in Los Angeles. The majority of people in my working life are Latino, African American or Asian, and the people in my personal life, including my Mexican American spouse, are reflective of the city’s population.

Who cares??? What is it with these people? EVERYTHING is racist to these people. I’ve never seen any quadriplegics or octogenarians either.

Blacks are scared of trees. Remember all those lynching on trees? That’s what they were complaining about. Blacks see trees and are microagressed and triggered because of the racist natures of trees.

raise taxes and bus inner-city children up to the Sierras so they too can enjoy the backcountry.

whether they want to go there or not. Or require that any white or nearly white person to be accompanied by a "person of color." am sure there are many underprivileged young men in the LA ghetto who would jump at the chance to accompany an affluent white youth into the back country.

Everyone knows that cougars and bears prefer black people’s flesh to white.

Instead of saying people of color, can I just say colored people and save the unnecessary syllable?

Democrat brainwashing. They are literally terrified that the wilds of California are loaded with white supremacists ready to murder them at the first opportunity. They are encouraged to stay in urban areas and vote right.

Maybe most blacks and Hispanics just don't want to.

Different people want to do different things.

I live in an area of the country loaded with hiking trails. I almost never go on them.

I do go on some of the ATV, snowmobile and off road trails though, (class IV in VT and class VI roads in NH). And logging roads in NH and ME.

All the critters hang out in the areas where vehicles with engines are, as they don't scare them.

The hiking trails are a desert of trees, as hikers on foot scare the critters, and there is little food for critters there.

Clear cuts are the best, as for a few years after they are loaded with all the berries and saplings, etc., critters eat. Animal cafeterias!

Maybe we should outlaw hiking trails as hikers are what really disturb animals.

What a disgusting tool.

Visiting national parks is voluntary and open to all. WTF???? Anyone can go if they WANT to. If there are few “people of color” it’s because they DON’T WANT TO GO.

He must want to force them to go.

40 years ago I was a member of the aerospace Corp outdoor sportsman club and the Sierra club. With Sierra I did two years of their mountaineering course, the second year with my 16 year old son, now 54. Snow camping, ice and rock climbing. I did a lot of Sierra treks and xc skiing,as well as Santa Monica hikes and bikes. GEE now that I think about it there were NO people of color anywhere I went. I didn’t think about it then, too intent on saving my ass. And now that I am content,ar age 79 to walk or bike on the flat hot beach, I DONT CARE if people of color don’t do these things.

I’ve hiked all over the Smoky Mountains and haven’t seen a “person of color” in the backcountry there either...And very, very few in the campgrounds in the Park....

I've hiked extensively in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Don't remember seeing any black hikers on any of the trails, nary a one. Nor do I see any blacks on any of the nature cruises I've taken down local rivers, or in the field birding. Virtually all my fellow hikers, cruisers, and birders were Caucasian, with the occasional Asian.

a racist article if ever there was one...
what are we to assume, that black people are too poor, sick, and ematiated to even walk? or maybe the LA Times wants us to conclude something else,...like black people are too lazy to get off their butts and this also explains why so many of them are sucking up our welfare tax money? Is THIS what the LATimes wants us to assume?

or what?
(for the recond, I do not agree with either of the above propositions, I am only typing them to illustrate just how STUPID and INANE this article is!)

What's missing mostly is people, period. That's sort of the point of being there.

That said, the government needs to get involved to resolve this inequity. If "people of color" don't want to backpack, then make them. We could call it, oh, I don't know, The Army or something.
