Even if you only occasionally frequent law commentary online, you have probably heard of Ilya Shapiro of the CATO Institute, as he is one of the most prominent voices on libertarian perspectives on the law today.
Shapiro took it upon himself to respond ... to recent comments made by Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld.

Bill Weld is a flat-out RINO at heart, although technically I guess he’s now a LINO.
“For those who might not know, the Cato Institute is owned by the Koch brothers.”
And it also looks like the Koch brothers purchased the Libertarian Party by the looks of changes to their platform from a few years ago until now.
Seems like libertarians are now globalist “free traders” and open border advocates. I guess Libertarianism is synonymous with anti-nationalism.
“We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or property.”
Remember, CATO and pure libertarians are for open boarders.
Both Johnson and Weld are pro abortion, which means their political philosophy is that they are psychopathic killers. Neither one is fit to hold any public office.
No one who is a member of Western Civilization will consider voting for them for an instant.
Anyone who has followed Weld’s career knows he is far from Libertarian. It would be difficult to distinguish his positions from Hillary’s.
Weren't they always?
Tariffs and Quotas
Like subsidies, tariffs and quotas serve only to give special treatment to favored interests and to diminish the welfare of other citizens. We therefore support abolition of all tariffs and quotas as well as the Tariff Commission and the Customs Court. First Libertarian Platform (1972)
but not one word about open borders in 1972 ...
“Bill Weld is a flat-out RINO at heart, although technically I guess hes now a LINO.”
100% correct.
Libertarians apparently don’t believe in diverse governments competing for best ideas and methods. Global government is all about the end of competition and the end of any power group’s ability to challenge a dictatorial, rogue government. Thanks libertarians for siding with despotism.
I campaigned for John Hosper and have been in and out of the LP. LP members and candidates tend to be selective libertarian on their pet issues.
They focus on one issue. Sometimes drugs. or the Fed. or the war in Iraq. Those libertarian on drugs are clueless on economics. And those libertarian on the Fed are clueless on drugs.
When I was in IL I checked and every single one of the hundreds of LP members I could identify voted Republican in the primary in ‘98, ‘00 and/or ‘02. So really they (we) are spoiled kids who pick up our ball and go home if we arent given the bat.
I was at a 3rd party picnic Saturday. (Not LP). It seemed they were opposed to compromising with the GOP. But they would work with and help the Green Party. So it isn’t about principle.
Weld is a PINO*
*Pussy in Name Only
Nobody was complaining much about mass immigration in 1972 because it hadn't really started, and nobody was really calling for more immigration (after the 1965 law was passed), because they figured the levels of immigration we'd had earlier were a thing of the past that wouldn't return.
Free trade, though, has always been a libertarian mantra.
Libertarianism is anther political fad spawned by the French Enlightenment, principally the likes of Diderot, Rousseau and Voltaire. Unsurprisingly, all through history, the French have been the catalysts for virtually every insane heresy, both religious and secular, inflicted upon mankind. It’s touchstone was was Revolutionary mantra: Liberte’/Egalite’/Fraternitie’;the very essence of malarkey. Wonder if Cato has a clue???
