AR-15 vs Mini-14
AShooting Journal ^ | 7/27/2016 | J Hines

Depending on what the AR's or Mini's are used for, we can all agree that the AR's is better for most situations. (SHTF, home defense, hunting, etc..) But, if we talk talk about the costs to have either a low end or tricked out piece of hardware, I guess the discussions can go on almost forever with the die hard AR’s and Mini-14 folks. Or, better yet which one is most accurate?

Here's what some are saying from Reddit and AR15Forum:
Poison_Tequila: the truth is a little different. An AR can be picky or reliable, a mini is probably more accurate than 95% of shooters. Comparing an AR to a mini is a little like comparing an iPhone to some Android device.

LCDJosh: The newer Minis are also not as finicky about mags as the older models. I like Ruger factory mags the most, but I’ve never had a faliure to feed from the cheap plastic eagle mags(not the greatest feed lips though), the polymer thermolds(though I do not recommend thermolds because I couldn’t insert the mag with the bolt closed), or even the pro mags.

DaSilence: I inherited the Mini-14, and rarely shoot it. The AR is the barbie doll of guns. You can do literally anything you want to it. They’re both fine rifles, and either would be a good choice.

Fozzy: If I were you, I'd tell him to get the AK, or be a good friend and spend some time talking him in to an AR. Read the rest of the sentiment here, What's your choice?

I’m an AR and FN-FAL enthusiast. Several of each in both carbine and battle rifle configuration.

I know a guy who has one for sale. He asked me if I knew anyone that might be interested. These days people are jumping on third party sales but no one I know is interested with parting with their hard earned cash for a mini 14.

I have fired both extensively.

I prefer the mini14 because the AR got a little clogged up after about 600rds and was not reliable to MY standards.

It also has an 18.5in barrel vs the 16in on the M4 variety AR.

Accuracy was equivalent, both under 2in at 100m with iron sites.

And I do hate the sound of that damn spring under my ear...

That said, all your friends and family have the AR. You can share magazines. Somebody can pick yours up if you are down and use it naturally.

AR First and Foremost. Everything else after that.

I only bought the one I had as it was not on the list of dreaded ass-halt weapons in the first Calif. registration farce. Buddy still has my Colt HBAR up in Oregon.

I really did want to like the Ruger, as it had all the feel of a miniature-M14 and all. The poor accuracy really bummed me out. Sold it to an unsuspecting friend that just wanted it.

Not the evil black rifle look for mini, but not as accurate either. Either are fine weapons but in a shtf event and the need for ammo becomes an issue a 5.56 AR would be an advantage to own with all the military and Leo mags, parts and ammo.

A friend asked me to check his out for accuracy some 20 years ago. This mini 14, with the Ammo he brought out, printed an awful 10” group at 100 yds. I don’t know the rate of twist on this thing but figured different weight bullets might improve the accuracy. I do believe my friend put it in a closet rather than spend any more on Ammo. Probably there to this day. When society crumbles it will make a fine short range defense weapon.

She does. She has a taste for Kimber 1911s.

I do love that woman.

The Mini-30 7.62x39 is extremely well put together and darn fun.

Here in the coast range of Oregon, I’ve never had a shot over 100 yards. It’s accurate enough for me. Usually pack my .06 though. Much better load variety. I keep a heavy 220 grn on the bottom of the stack. We have bears too

Wish I had bought one of those when they were cheap, they aren’t anymore.
