Depending on what the AR's or Mini's are used for, we can all agree that the AR's is better for most situations. (SHTF, home defense, hunting, etc..) But, if we talk talk about the costs to have either a low end or tricked out piece of hardware, I guess the discussions can go on almost forever with the die hard ARs and Mini-14 folks. Or, better yet which one is most accurate?
Here's what some are saying from Reddit and AR15Forum:
Poison_Tequila: the truth is a little different. An AR can be picky or reliable, a mini is probably more accurate than 95% of shooters. Comparing an AR to a mini is a little like comparing an iPhone to some Android device.
LCDJosh: The newer Minis are also not as finicky about mags as the older models. I like Ruger factory mags the most, but Ive never had a faliure to feed from the cheap plastic eagle mags(not the greatest feed lips though), the polymer thermolds(though I do not recommend thermolds because I couldnt insert the mag with the bolt closed), or even the pro mags.
DaSilence: I inherited the Mini-14, and rarely shoot it. The AR is the barbie doll of guns. You can do literally anything you want to it. Theyre both fine rifles, and either would be a good choice.
Fozzy: If I were you, I'd tell him to get the AK, or be a good friend and spend some time talking him in to an AR. Read the rest of the sentiment here, What's your choice?
Commie
I’ve had both. The older minis with the lightweight barrel were noticeably inaccurate(minute of basketball). The newer ones with a thicker barrel shoot much better. A properly tuned AR with a good barrel will easily outshoot a mini. (possibly .5 -1.5 moa) An AK on the other hand needs serious tuning to get it reasonably under 2 moa. But it is a hardy and versatile gun that will never fail you. My reccomendation is to buy all 3 if Hillary gets elected!
Always be able to shoot whatever (common) ammo you are able to get yer hands on. .380, 9mm, 45 ACP, .223, .308, AK 7.62, 30-06. At least one each. IMHO.
I would have bought a Mini-14 years ago if they used the same magazine that the AR-15 does.
Agree about the Mini 30.
The 7.62x39 round is twice the size bullet.
My old SS Ranch was one of the horrible ones. Designed to have a scope on it so I put one on.
Go out to sight it in, at about 80 yards could not get a definable group to move the sights. I am talking 4-5" at under 100 yards, and I am a very good rifle shot. I could darn near shoot my .44 Mag Super Blackhawk that well with open sights.
There were a lot of questionable design issues with the rifle, even assuming it had a decent barrel. Lots of places for stress to be applied to the barrel near the gas block.
Not just the Brady Bill-era Mini-14, but also that fateful first stripped AR lower receiver at a gun show and all that followed. After I earned my WECSOG diploma with an StG-58 parts kit and gear-logo Imbel receiver (Oh yeahhh...), I began post-graduate work in Remington 700 M40A1 clones (a great way to re-use brass from the FAL).
Without ol' BJC stirring the pot, I might've missed a lot of fun. Until 2005, that is, when the waters of Hurricane Katrina rendered me as gunless as the average canoe-paddling newbie. C'est la vie.
Yeah, but they never hit anyone!
That’s because of the poor accuracy of the Mini-14!
Would like a 30 for deer. Looking for an accurate one.
Ruger makes an accurized mini 14 of late. They weigh more than the original because they replaced the whippy barrel with a bull barrel. I feel that defeats the purpose. There are gunsmiths who have accurized them. Probably the same way. Heavy barrel.
Check this out. It depends on if you are using commie .311 bullets or US commercial .308 ones if want accuracy.

Too many boating accidents around here. FReepers are lousy boaters.
Just two AR, the S&W AR15-22 that is cheap and fun to shoot and a new Eagle Arms 5.56 that is not so cheap. Not sure my wife will not blow up over more added to the collection.
You're not kidding. I was qualifying on the range when I was in the Corps(M16A2). We were on the 200 meter line and one of the range Marines brought out a mini 14. First he shot it in the sitting position. All over the place. Then he went to the prone position. Ditto. Then another Marine tried it. Same results. You could also see that it had a kick to it where as the M 16 has hardly any. Made up my mind then and there I would never buy one unless somebody made me an offer I could not refuse.
I was not aware the weapon had gotten better,
So here’s Your Chance !
Mini 14 convinced me I couldn’t hit Anything,!!!
Went to shotguns,,,,
Damn thing!
Can I sue Ruger!?
POS MINI 14,,
I should have figured it out,
That’s why it’s not on any list,,,
Can’t hit $
I have a wife who likes to shoot.
