GOP senators move to keep women out of military draft

A group of Senate Republicans wants to remove a controversial provision from the Senate's annual defense policy bill that would require women to register for the draft.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would remove the provision and block any court, including the Supreme Court, from hearing cases about who must register with the Selective Service System.

The debate over requiring women to take part has split Congressional Republicans, and opponents argue that Congress needs to spend more time studying the issue. Lee’s amendment would add a section into the defense bill expressing the "sense of Congress that the decision of the secretary of Defense to open all military occupational specialties to women raises important legal, political and social questions about who should be required to register for the military selective service."

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced in December that the Pentagon would open all combat roles to women.

The amendment would also give only Congress authority to change the Selective Service Act and require the Pentagon prepare a report for Congress July 1, 2017, about whether the selective service is still needed and if registration should be required regardless of gender.

The amendment is backed by GOP Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), James Inhofe (Okla.), Mike Rounds (S.D.), Ben Sasse (Neb.) and Roger Wicker (Miss.).

Though a Senate floor fight over the provision is expected, Lee faces an uphill battle. A push to remove it during the Senate Armed Services Committee markup failed in a 7-19 vote.

Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has introduced an amendment to the NDAA to get rid of the draft entirely.

If the current provision is left in the Senate bill, supporters will still face a fight with the House.

The House Armed Services Committee initially approved an amendment expanding the draft, with 26 Democrats and six Republicans on the committee supporting the proposal.

But the Rules Committee moved to strip the language, and the House formally removed the proposal as part of a larger procedural vote.

The draft, which ended in 1973, has been in the spotlight since the Pentagon began opening more roles to female soldiers.

A Rasmussen Reports poll released earlier this year found that 49 percent of all likely U.S. voters think women should be required to register for the draft, compared to 44 percent who disagree.

“......A Rasmussen Reports poll released earlier this year found that 49 percent of all likely U.S. voters think women should be required to register for the draft,......”

Nobody asked me. Curious how the question was presented.

I said the same damn thing on FR many times, personally they should get rid of it, I do not believe the government has the right to enslave anyone to serve in the military, but in the interest of fairness, one or the other needs to happen, if not them some Man needs to sue the government for that is BS.

The women of this benighted country have enabled every left wing azzhole and commie dipschit that has come down the pike ever since female suffrage a hundred years ago. Everything from Prohibition to Wilsonian worldwide busybodiness to FDR and the creation of the socialist welfare state can be laid at the feet of the Marxocrats and their female cohorts that gave them overwhelming electoral victories year after year throughout the 20th and into the 21st centuries. Every sick and degenerate social pathology, from abortion to homosexual mainstreaming to euthanasia to the phenomenon of the welfare mother with multiple illegitimate bastards to the feminization of the military to the destruction of the concept of equality before the law and its affirmative action implementation, can be directly attributed to the rise of women and their malign influence in our politics. It would only be sweet justice to force women to finally bear the full brutal and bloody burden that their ignorant asininity has foisted on us all. The era of the special class must end. If women want full equality and respect, then let them dodge the bullets and bombs that the men have had to deal with forever.

I have a feeling that this is some sort of bait-and-switch.

Conservatives may "win" by preventing women from being up for the draft, but this whole process might end up reinforcing the concept of a future draft.

A draft for what? What war that we don't need to fight for people who will not appreciate it?

Commander-In-Chief sends young men into combat while young women go to college, play sports, get educated (read: indoctrinated) in that traditional family values are sexist and men are violent pigs, then eventually get jobs in climate-controlled offices and wonder why there are no men available to date. Well, there are always illegal aliens. News at 11.

Men born after December 31, 1959 are required to register with Selective Service. You never heard that before?

Well, I was vaguely aware that there was some phony pretend system using the name of the FORMER military draft.

When I registered with the Selective Service System on my 18th birthday, 25 000 men per month were being involuntarily inducted into the armed forces of the United States. The year I registered, 296,406 men my age and slightly older were involuntarily inducted. So, yes, I've heard of the draft.

However, there is no draft now. There will never be another one. Whether women participate in this charade is of no importance.

And if they did? There is NO POSSIBILITY WHATSOEVER that any female will ever be involuntarily indicted into the armed forces. You know it, and I know it.

So, these "Republican senators" are merely signaling, and stupidly signaling at that.

But you knew that.

Probably doesn’t matter. Some yo-yo will sue and the USSC will find that under equal-protection Women can’t be exempt from the Draft.

Maybe we can get them some doilies for the tanks.

They want to be men, let them have a man’s responsibility. Sign up for the draft.

Just take the Rosie O’Donnell types and make them interrogate prisoners. Dress them up like a dominatrix.
