Georgetown University’s ugly past has caught up with its PC administrators

The corruption of our great institutions has often been brought about by their location and nearness to the worst influences in our society.

Georgetown University’s location in Washington DC, the heart of America’s political cesspool, raises an interesting question about which institution corrupted which. Did Washington corrupt the Jesuit school or was it the school and its disgusting history that helped corrupt the workings of our government?

Recently uncovered historical records have revealed that during a financial crisis in its earliest days, Georgetown was forced to sell off one of the Jesuit Order’s most valuable assets to stay afloat.

In 1838 the corporation that founded and funded Georgetown owned a tobacco plantation in Maryland which was staffed by hundreds of Black African slaves being held against their will. To raise the necessary cash to keep Georgetown open the corporation sold off 272 slaves hurling them into the frightening uncertainties of a life owned by other people.

As will always happen sooner or later, the truth of Georgetown’s very existence has finally bubbled up to the surface. To say Georgetown is in trouble would be a serious understatement.

Georgetown is now, for all practical purposes, on the hook for a mind boggling moral and financial debt to the thousands of easily discovered descendants of these 272 human beings.

The question now is what to do? Without a doubt the self-righteous hypocrites that run the formerly Catholic university would be lightening quick to demand that the perpetrator of such an outrage sell off all its asset and beg a settlement with the thousands of claimants. But we know that will not happen. To the contrary the school’s administrators are not working on an orderly way to...

A cheap shot--and a foray completely tangential to what we need to be discussing this year.

I do not know whether Georgetown is today as Leftist leaning as most American Universities. But the completely legal transaction of a Maryland Corporation--which is where I assume the Corporation was based--in order to endow or float the University is not a legitimate issue in 2016.

For that matter, the deal would have been perfectly legal at the time in the District as well.

The idea of punishing the successors of people who acted legally in their own era for deeds that would not be legal today, is applied lunacy, similar to what the most virulent Leftist organizations advocate.

This is an ex post facto lynch attempt!

Love it when liberals can get caught up in such situations. Georgetown at one time owned slaves ???,,, OMG....based on how liberals view the world and their zeal to pay reparations for slavery, clearly Georgetown should have to go out of business to satisfy the self righteous liberal mindset here.

Agree completely, yet I love this story because there is no more hypocritical, obnoxious group of people than 90% of the administrators, faculty, alumni, and students of Georgetown University. If any other organization or school were dealing with this revelation, these Georgetown people would be screaming for reparations. I am going to enjoy watching Georgetown get hoisted on its own liberal, morally bankrupt petard on this one. P.S. By the way, Georgetown is Bill Clinton's undergraduate alma mater. Too perfect.

Such irrational and irrelevant claptrap can only be the product of a pathologically twisted mind.

Please remind me that from now on, I should skip all items presented under the sponsorship of Kevin “Coach” Collins.

On the other hand, they would demand it of a for-profit corporation.

What’s sauce for the goose.

Not a cheap shot, but a perfectly legitimate expoosure of the hypocrisy of the left, and if it in any way helps to stop Hillary, then perfectly legitimate politics as well.

Ohioan- you totally miss the point. Of course this is ex post facto- it’s exactly what liberals always do. No matter how unfair, it’s just fun seeing them get some of their own medicine!

The writer is out of touch with reality if he thinks 50 years into LBJ's 'Great Society' you can trace the paternal linage of the 'People of Color'. Over 70 percent of blacks born in the US are bastards.

The first census that included the personal names of the people who would have been slaves in 1838 would be the 1870 census...unless they have documents from 1838 that list the slaves in question, it may be impossible to identify the ones who were still alive in 1870. Many slaves had surnames which they changed when they were freed—Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass are cases in point. Then to trace the descendants to the present would be a lot of work. Sounds like a job for Genealogy Roadshow.

Got to agree with you, with possible exception of some of the the students/alumni — many and their families got snookered thinking it was a "Catholic" institution. But GU's smug defense of their alliance with the Saudis stinks on ice. And their alliance with the Sex Positive movement ever since they installed a lay president has been appalling.

The bill of sale might help, depending on whether they were sold in bulk, batches, or in a dispersal auction and how detailed the bill of sale was - whether it identified them individually or just by general description.

“Black African slaves being held against their will”

As opposed to the white European slaves who volunteered for the position?
