Was talking to a recently-retired computer-science professor today; he said in the last few years he's been seeing students showing up in college who have literally

He has been teaching a higher-level class in automating control of a train setup.

Part of the project is to assemble a train car from a kit.

These kids have no idea how to do it.

I’m not sure it’s so much the bead draws the race in as much as the bore the race is in doesn’t heat up, so the race can’t expand when heated, so it gets fatter, then shrinks when it cools.

Either way, sounds like it would work.

I can identify with him, I have a disability when it comes to right and left, my sister, one brother and 2 granddaughters have the same problem. I operate with North, South, East and West. And for a woman, I’m very handy. I also use that phrase or I pretend to hold a pencil.

Or busy ‘bullet journaling’ with little stickers and washi tape. Good Lord. And I can be critical. I write daily in a journal but it stops at little weather doodles. And an occasional flower, coffee mug doodle.

And weak welds are easy to make pretty with wire welding. I was pretty good with a stick but didn't do enough vertical uprights to get the hang of those. I did more custom machine work, machine op, fab, cutting and expediting (and race cars and other projects with friends and at home: electronics, electrical, residential building, etc.). Maybe try those vertical uprights again in the near future, or maybe I'll join to masses with more wire welding. ...not much current here (too far from power lines), and work with wire can go faster.

I’ve seen two recently made science fiction movies, where astronauts used duct tape to seal air leaks against the vacuum of space and Mars. Why did they have duct tape? Heh. Oh, yeah, highly educated folks. “Duck” tape is the only answer.

Well, the weld is molten when it goes on, and shrinks as it cools. It’s attached to the face of the bearing race, so that goes along for the ride.

Good on ya. My grown daughter was visiting me at my work one day and the boss needed some end tables assembled. My girl volunteered to take care of the task. She had them up and ready to go in no time. Boss was impressed. She did me proud and the icing on the cupcake was she gave me (her Mom) full credit for teaching her how to use tools. And yes my Son can cook, do laundry and a brake job. Great kids.

A standard transmission is best for downshifting instead of using brakes while going down mountain passes. And on level ground, a standard won’t quit working because of bad internal seals. It will last much longer than an automatic.

The less expensive choices that I know of so far are steel fab at home, aluminum (see "English wheel"), fiberglass and carbon fiber (or glass and carbon laminated). For glass or carbon, molds are often made of plywood and styrofoam or original parts (e.g., original hood used as mold for glass or carbon fiber hood).

I’m in awe of a good welder. Many things I was involved in my career were dependent on exceptional skills by a welder. Many of my projects involved extreme temperatures and volatile fuels. Those piping flanges had to be exactly parallel. A good aluminum welder is a sight to behold. My little old blast gate hypersonic chamber designed in 1991 still runs today, much to my amazement. I feel like such and ass at times, thanks for the thread FRiends. I will try to mentor some young folks at the local educational centers. pay it forward.
