Donald Trump on Saturday reiterated his belief that Japan should arm itself to deter a threat from North Korea rather than have the U.S. military protect the longtime ally against the rogue nuclear nation.
Meanwhile, Trump throughout the day maintained that the U.S. should pressure NATO member states to begin "paying their fair share."
"I would rather have them not arm, but I'm not going to continue to lose this tremendous amount of money. And frankly, the case could be made that let them protect themselves against North Korea. They'd probably wipe them out pretty quick," Trump said at a campaign event in Wasau, Wisconsin, Saturday afternoon.
The GOP front-runner added, "If they fight, you know what, that'd be a terrible thing. Terrible. ... But if they do, they do."
Earlier this week, Trump raised eyebrows and startled Japan and South Korea, two of America's strongest allies, with the suggestion that the U.S. military should be withdrawn from their shores, with nuclear weapons replacing them....

Curiouser and curiouser.
and Japan doesn’t
They’re headed that way, though.
I don’t see a NK, SK and Japan war being contained.
Outrageous! The United States should continue basing 30,000 young Americans as “trip-wire” cannon fodder against the Norks while South Korea sells de-valued flat screens and recycled beer can autos to our crumbling Middle Class and our ever growing Welfare Class. It’s good for Wall Street.
What the hell is Trump thinking!
Remember that Star Trek episode where Kirk disables the machine that vaporizes thousands because they were simulated deaths......
Send Kim dondumbf/&k the Atkins diet book. He's looking a little chunky these days. Maybe he should get out and walk some. Hopefully some sane nork shoves a shank in the phony SOB.
Remember, Trump is a negotiator. He likes to keep his cards close to the vest. One way or another he clearly wants to lessen the amount of money we spend on protecting other nations. Whether that entails a complete withdraw of troops or greater reimbursement from these other nations, or some combination of these two approaches remains to be seen.
You see, if Japan and NATO, etc. actually start contributing, we will not have to pay as much. Easy, huh?
This should not be a complicated concept to anyone who has the responsibility of managing their own personal finciaanl affairs. The fewer checks you have to write, the better.
.
Overall, he's learning... but it might be too late.
It's interesting that the entire planet bent over backwards for the community organizer who's best attribute was rolling a joint, and now, everyone on the planet is taking hatchet to a reasonably successful businessman ho builds stuff and employs people. Shame on Donald!
He went after the UN today. The Uniparty would never do that.
We have financed Europe welfare state by providing for their defense while they squander any wealth they may have. Meanwhile our own country is close to insolvency to the point that we cannot provide for our own defense properly.
I am not a Trump supporter by any stretch.
That said, you are 100% correct.
You just made me realize something which I had never thought about.
Perhaps if we had already long expected Europe to provide for their own defense, they would not be as spineless and capitulative to Islam as they are today.
With self-reliance comes inherent strength and wisdom. Europe by and large has neither.
If South Korea wanted the Bomb, they could have it yesterday. Same for Japan.
There has to be a better way to deal with the Norks than that.
The S. Korean’s spend a smaller percentage of their GDP than we do, with a madman on their northern flank. I’m tired of being more invested in other people’s security than they are.
During my tours there we sometimes “joked” that we were there to keep the ROK Army from going North.
We defend the entire world, they defend a demilitarized zone.
