Several years ago there was a writer-s strike. This was the beginning of reality TV, which in theory did not require a writer. The writer-s guild -won.-, keeping prices outrageously high and imposing onerous requirements on the users of their services. They also raised the bar to entry for new writers ensuring the guild-s eventual extinction. The reason we no longer have variety shows like Carol Burnette is nobody can afford them. The Writer-s Guild has destroyed TV and itself.
Thank you for that information.
Now there are self-serving “Awards” shows.
And watching Reality TV is like driving by a car wreak.

For fifty-two years, until September 2015, the spirit of the Ed Sullivan Show came alive every Saturday night via Sábado Gigante Gigantic Saturday. Created and hosted since 1963 by Mario Luis Kreutzberger Blumenfeld, AKA Don Francisco, Sábado Gigante was a time warp of sorts in that it provided a stage for a Sullivan Show cross section of Latin talent. Even many commercials were presented product in-hand in a live 50s manner. And like Sullivan, Don Francisco provided a first break for many Latin performers. Perhaps using taped segments in later years, Sábado Gigante was produced with a live and very much participatory audience.
Ah yes, those were the good old DECENT days!
“...19 Things You Didn’t Know About Don Francisco
1. His real name is Mario Luis Kreutzberger Blumenfeld, but we all know him as Don Francisco
2. The iconic Latino host is Jewish. There were bar mitzvahs and some special celebrations, but his family wasn’t strictly observant.
3. His parents were Holocaust survivors.
4. His mother was an opera singer in Germany and his father was a tailor.
5. He traveled to New York to study because he wanted to be a famous clothing designer, but he spent most of the time watching TV.
6. When he returned to his native Chile, he used what he had learned from Ed Sullivan and Steve Allen by watching their shows and made a whole new variety show in Spanish in his country. The show, called “Sabados Gigantes” aired in Chile’s Channel 13.”.....
More and more talent shows would be great! Musicians, singers, dancers.
=O
That was the raw video from their third appearance on the Sullivan show.
In case you didn’t know, that’s Tommy James and the (original) Shondells.
Good song, but it had the misfortune of being the ‘B’ side of a record titled “Crystal Blue Persuasion”.
Orbison is my specialty as you say, but first I have to give props to J. Cash because while checking your posted links I came across the following “can’t miss” that is seldom played any more.
Also, everyone needs to understand that there were no two closer friends in life or in the music biz than Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash.

And Sonny James, posted earlier, covered Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” and it was a Country Chart topper at #1 in ‘69 while otherwise the world went crazy in the late ‘60s.
If the inane chit-chat were ditched, the tube would be mostly silent. (which might be a blessing)
Raleigh, NC has a channel called MeTV that plays the old shows that makes you laugh or smile at real humor not the hate filled, nasty stuff that is called humor today. Great to see something positive.
We have MeTV where I live also. It’s my favorite channel.
