Releasing a Trapped Bobcat?

Don't do it this way

The method you see here are not gold standard of what you should do, this video is bordering on the "ultimate" of what you should absolutely NOT do if you find yourself in this situation.

Not much is known about where this video was shot, and if this was their trap or if they were illegally tampering with another trapper’s set, but one thing is for sure, the guy who joins the bobcat release party right at the end has never seen what a bobcat can do when it's angry. Check out the video here.

If its not caught in a trap you probably won’t ever see one long enough to worry.
I see them in my field from the house all the time, never in the woods.
They want nothing to do with you.

Game warden would have had the bobcat euthanized.

Yeah, but then dispatching the animal would be on the game warden, and the landowner wouldn't have to worry about legal problems. Or ya could just shoot, shovel and shut up.

A bobcat can rip out your jugular.

It’s claws *are* that sharp, and it *can* jump that high, and it *does* know where it is and how to hit it.

This one just didn’t feel like it. Lucky guy.

A trapped bobcat nearly handed Elmer Keith his head before he dispatched it. If they can take on that sly old boy....

You likely have more than one bobcat. We live on a river and
see tracks a lot. Too big for kitty kat tracks.

"A bobcat can rip out your jugular."

Sure, it theoretically can, but that doesn't mean it's an occurrence that is ever likely to happen. When bobcats attack larger predators, their strategy is to jump on the back, because they are simply not able to fit their mouths around a much larger animal's neck in order to kill it. They do not use their claws to swipe at necks, they use their jaws and fangs.

Also, they do not attack larger predators unless they are forced into a fight, because there is no upside for them. They're much more likely to lose such a fight (even a puny human can kill a bobcat barehanded), and there are much more easily obtained meals out there for them.

Depending on the state there could be a bobcat season. Trap was set for coyote or other fur bearer.

Fur bearer?

My forebears wear fur bearers.

I trap and hunt year round. Hogs, coon, coyote all destroy good wildlife or habitat. You have to get rid of them. But I have also caught bobcats in live traps and turned them loose, miles away. Just ordered 6 more Duke Dog Proof coon traps. Guess it depends on where you live and what needs to be done.

. seeing all those pics of animals just sitting there with their paws in those traps? Hard to watch.

I believe in quick kill hunting, not leg hold trapping. In the link posted above on how to remove a bobcat from a trap, the author of the video said that there are only certain seasons on bobcat where he is and any trapped out of season have to be released..........So now he's showing how to release an animal that he accidentally caught in his leg hold trap with a potentially broken leg or severely injured one.

Thanks, it’s saved for later. I might learn how to loose other critters too! Squirrels in the Havahart trap...

They want nothing to do with you.

A couple of years ago, I was on a nice, rural bike ride by myself. I stopped to drink some water, and enjoy how beautiful it was. Suddenly a deer walked out of the woods carefully, about seventy feet away across this nice tall grass meadow towards me. It got about twenty feet when it suddenly jumped, and bolted back towards the woods.

Where it jumped I saw this big fur ball stick its head up. Turning it's head towards me, was the biggest bobcat I'd ever seen (not a cougar, clearly a bobcat).

It was beautiful, I had seen bunches before (never one this big), but like you say, they don't hang around for you to watch. It also looked straight at me very intently for about ten seconds.

I kept wondering if it was trying to figure out if I was food, thankfully it turned around and bounded into the woods where the deer had gone. The other good thing: I knew bobcats wanted nothing to do with us humans.

Don't leghold traps generally result in broken bones and serious tissue damage? In that case it may be the compassionate thing to do rather than a release and slow starvation.

here bobcat trapping season ENDS before coyote trapping season....so if ya trap a bobcat you got to release it..and since I do not take video’s you can just guess what sometimes happens here...
