A lot of people are very afraid of Donald Trump. His success will come at their expense because power in politics is a zero sum commodity. What one side gains is always at the expense of the other.
Every day we are presented with twisted and convenient definitions of conservatism from those who desperately donât want to be on the losing side.
To them, changing oneâs mind and acknowledging the value of conservative positions has become a sign of insincere conservatism. They echo the liberal line about Lincoln not being so great because he, âCame lateâ to the idea of freeing the slaves, without any Self-consciousness. Smug self-congratulation will do that.
âMoving the goal posts,â is another verbal gymnastic trick Trumpâs attackers have borrowed from the Left. Thus Trumpâs positions never seem to go far enough to satisfy them.
What a conservative candidate should stand for is very clear and Trump holds all of the important positions a conservative such hold.
Trump wants to: close our borders and tighten control over who comes into America;
Built a strong and feared military;
Keep America safe from those who want to kill us; and is not afraid to name them as Muslims;
Spread the pro-life message;
Institute an effective taxing plan that will provide opportunities for Americaâs recovery;
Deal with the world from a position of strength and regain respect...

From what I can gather: Ronald Reagan, the hero of most conservatives today, was a liberal between 1932 and 1962 at the height of liberalism in America. He strongly supported FDR, arguably the most liberal President in American history, and the New Deal policies of the era, including Social Security. Reagan not only supported FDR, he admired the man too.
Here are the eleven Reagan principles.
⢠Freedom
⢠Faith
⢠Family
⢠Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life
⢠American Exceptionalism
⢠The Foundersâ Wisdom and Vision
⢠Lower Taxes
⢠Limited Government
⢠Peace Through Strength
⢠Anti-Communism
⢠Belief in the Individual
Trump, “conservative”?
Isn’t there a missing < / sarc > tag around here we can use?
Good and a ill-ary upon them all!
so, you think the liberalism of 1960 is the same as the liberalism of 2016? well, I guess that helps explain the delusion that Trump is a conservative.
ANYONE who thinks Donald Trump is a conservative is delusional, high, or ignorant. I hope you’re getting some good smoke.
I think Trump can easily win the general.
I think he will be the next president.
I’m very concerned he is going to slit our throats.
I will definitely vote for him if he is the nominee as it is possible he might turn out to be good president. I’ll take the unknown over pure evil (dim nominee).
Nothing on shrinking spending or reducing government. His position on abortion and Planned Parenthood changes. He's for government provided health insurance. He's for U.S. intervention in Syria/Iraq. He's for large tax increases in the form of high tariffs. None of those are conservative values.
Ergo, Trump will not win NY, NJ or PA.
Trump is not conservative and he has unfavorables at a record high for a candidate. Other than that the headline is dead nuts on.
I’ll wager Trump has more conservative values than most of the candidates running...and he has better political instincts than all of them.
Don’t let your search for perfection lead you astray...
Does it suck not to understand history and how the US circa 1940 is absolutely nothing like it is today?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I’m not aware of anything Trump has accomplished to advance conservative or American principles. A lot of talk and criticism, but that’s all.
You’re the one who brought up the Roosevelt quote (well, paraphrase), so what did you have in mind?
I’m a Trump guy but the speed at which hillary is coming apart leads me to suspect that while Trump would win by a landslide in the fall—any other pubbie would squeak by as well.
Personally, I don’t really care anymore. Conservative politicians are unicorns. They don’t exist. I want results. The Conservative title carries no weight for me any more. Too many lies. Too many fairy tales.
Tell us Trump's long standing conservative principles that he's has prior to last year?
Not quite. True, Reagan was a self-described FDR "New Deal" Democrat through WW2 and much of the early 50's. But it was actually in the late 1950's that Reagan began his conversion to conservatism, even while he was still president of the Screen Actors Guild. It wasn't until 1962 that he changed his registration, but he had changed his philosophy long before that.
I’m confused. People continue to argue whether or not Trump is a conservative. To my knowledge, he has never claimed to be one and his main campaign stands are patriotic / nationalist.
Well, except for universal health care. And amnesty. And gun control. And government surveillance. And eminent domain. And....
Haven't you heard? Trump's principles, statements and positions from before June 16, 2015* don't count.
(* also applies to any 'inconvenient' principles, statements or positions held after that date)
