CAREFREE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Firefighters say flames swept through an abandoned studio for fashion shoots early Sunday morning in the town of Carefree.
A passerby called sheriff's deputies at about 3:30 a.m., Sunday after spotting the flames shooting out of the empty building near Pima and Cave Creek Road in Carefree. We're told the building was known as Woburn Studios, an old retail fashion studio where shoots were held.
When deputies arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. Rural-Metro firefighters also responded to the scene and they have been working to put out the flames. ï ï Crews from Scottsdale Fire and Phoenix Fire Department assisted Rural Metro crews as they remain on-scene to put out the blaze. MCSO investigators say the cause of the fire is suspicious, and they remain on scene gathering evidence.
Models from around the world would come to Woburn Studios for photo shoots. Now the structure is expected to be a total loss. The building has been abandoned for years and was scheduled to be re-zoned.
What is “The Dick Van Dyke Studio”? Was it built by/for him? Merely named for him? It certainly wasn’t where the classic show was made.
I’m guessing this was the place that “The New Dick Van Dyke Show” from the early-1970s was filmed. The series with DVD and Hope Lange.
That show was only mildly less forgettable than “The New Andy Griffith Show”. Fortunately, they had “Diagnosis: Murder” and “Matlock” to end their TV careers on a happy note.
CAREFREE, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -Old Woburn studios in Carefree go up in flames
A huge fire in Carefree Sunday morning ripped through what used to be the old Woburn studio building.Built about 35 years ago, the site was used for outdoor fashion photography.
Earlier, a Rural Metro fire spokesman said he misidentified it as the old Dick Van Dyke studios, which were once located near the Boulders off Scottsdale Road.
It was a mistake. this studio was only 30 years old.
Carefree was the inspiration for Gordon Lightfoot’s “Carefree Highway”, when he was roilling through town and liked the name. One of G-Light’s finest.
Note: When I first heard the song as a kid I thought it was “every highway”, not Carefree lol
“DVD”...I see what you did there ;-)
Carefree Hwy ( Hwy 74) runs between Rt 60/93 to the town of Carefree. Been on it many a time.
You are correct, it is the inspiration of the song
I always loved Hope Lange.
Note:
I thought it was every highway till I just read your post
Ditto. She always came across as warm and endearing.
For example, the Bob Dylan song "Tangled Up In Blue" - for years I thought it was "Tired Of Loving Blues." There are many other examples.
There's actually a word for this - mondegreen.
That second Van Dyke comedy show has been almost forgotten; I believe it was set in Scottsdale. Then later, he had ‘’Diagnosis Murder’’ with one of his sons.
Yeah, it’s a pretty forgotten series. Never circulated much in reruns, even though it did run for three seasons. Last time I encountered it in syndication was about fifteen years ago on the old Goodlife Network. It just wasn’t too memorable of a show, despite the cast. It’s not available on dvd.
Is that the place where "the bathroom's on the right"?
Indeed. Tony Dekker does an outstanding cover. I may actually like it more than the original.
“’scuse me while I kiss this guy.”
