Could a Mars colony become a nation? That question was posed by Michael Byers, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia in a Washington Post article. Byersâ answer to his question was yes. A body of international law has evolved over time that recognizes the rights of people to self-determination.

It would surpass the old battle cry "nuke from orbit", because it would be nuking from a different orbit!
On the other hand, if such a colony actually existed, it would be hugely dependent on Earth support systems. That means, no nuking at all!
Or, if nuking is necessary, it must be delegated to earth-bound agents.

Maybe we can piss off the Martians enough that they'll make a visit to Congress....

I thought we had claimed Mars already.
Didn’t Sheila Jackson Lee state that our Astronauts had planted a US flag on Mars?

I was going to move to that island on LOST if Hillary or Bernie is elected president, but Mars will do just fine.

The control freak governments here LITERALLY believe they have natural right to control what occurs on other planets and who owns them.

“On the other hand, if such a colony actually existed, it would be hugely dependent on Earth support systems.”
Hard to imagine something almost certain to be incredibly costly not having anti-independence measures built into the bones of it. It would be foolish to declare independence before the Mars colony/colonies could not only survive on its own but prosper while defying the state/states that probably paid for it, however long that might take. One thing to maybe keep in mind is that any kids born there didn’t sign up to be Martians.

It ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.In fact, it's cold as hell.
And there's no one there to raise them.
If ya did.

Martian women have to be hot. It only gets up to 70 degrees in the summer at the Martian equator and down to -225 degrees at the winter poles.
So Martian women’s body temperatures average 194 degrees.
They would burn any Earthman to the ground.
Except for Lazamataz, who is also very hot-blooded.

One thing I will say about my wife: She packed my bags last night, pre-flight.
