It would surpass the old battle cry "nuke from orbit", because it would be nuking from a different orbit!

On the other hand, if such a colony actually existed, it would be hugely dependent on Earth support systems. That means, no nuking at all!

Or, if nuking is necessary, it must be delegated to earth-bound agents.

Hard to imagine something almost certain to be incredibly costly not having anti-independence measures built into the bones of it. It would be foolish to declare independence before the Mars colony/colonies could not only survive on its own but prosper while defying the state/states that probably paid for it, however long that might take. One thing to maybe keep in mind is that any kids born there didn’t sign up to be Martians.
