So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on.
I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention?
I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?
“The Horse Soldiers”..superb movie based on a true story about a heroic cavalry raid thru Mississippi in 1863.
(William Holden co-stars)
Interesting to see this post.. I was watching old westerns on Encore’s Western Channel with my 6-year-old granddaughter. She loves ‘em — she’s intrigued with the idea of using horses for transportation. I’d much rather she be intrigued with flicks like that, than the foul-mouthed crap churned out these days.
Also “The Flying Leathernecks”
I didn’t find it a bore when I was a kid. I loved it. But, I show it as we begin the unit in Bible on the Mosaic Covenant. Good introduction.
“Do you prefer the leg... or the breast?”
both posts 2 & 3 are recommendations 2 & 1.
Cool!
âThey Were Expendableâ â John Ford, director.
This movie should be seen in the original black and white. The colorized version has the officers and chief petty officers dressed in blue dungarees.
John Wayne: Hellfighters, The Green Berets, The Shootist.
All of them.

Ha!...”Miss Hannah Hunter, of Greenbriar”..
Personally I love “The Man That Shot Liberty Valance”. Wayne is sort of in a supporting role almost, playing second fiddle to Jimmy Stewart which is rare to see. But his role is pivotal to the whole story. And how can you go wrong with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart as the good guys and Lee Marvin as the villain?
It’s not a WWII or Western, but a great movie nevertheless: “The Quiet Man” with Maureen O’Hara (RIP).
For WWII movies, you can have them see the good version of Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor.
That would be Battle of Britain, Tora Tora Tora and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. In that sequence, followed by Midway.
War movie: 12 o’clock High.
Western: The Searchers.
I would add the Band of Brothers series.
In Harm’s Way is one of the BEst John Wayne war pictures ever.
The Searches, Sands of Iwo Jima, and the Quiet Man.
