Volcanic eruptions have occurred at their highest rate in 300 years, and experts caution that there could be a massive "super-volcano" with the potential to kill millions and destroy substantial amounts of wildlife. Scientists at the European Science Foundation said super-volcanoes could erupt within the next 80 years, reported the Tech Times.
Researchers said the active volcanoes that could prove to be the most dangerous are Yellowstone in Wyoming, Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, and Popocatépetl near Mexico City. If any of the three erupt, the damage would be "beyond the imagination of anything manâs activity and global warming could do over 1,000 years," according to the researchers.
In the report, titled "Extreme Geo-hazards: Reducing the Disaster Risk and Increasing Resilience,â scientists predict that the Yellowstone volcano will erupt within 70 years and will have the potential to wipe out a considerable amount of the western United States.

77 million years ago that was a coastal mountain range, with a plate (called the Farallon Plate) subducting under it, which is what caused the volcanoes. The Farallon plate is gone now; it completely subducted under the North American plate and disappeared. The Elkhorn mountains aren’t going to erupt again.

And I apologize, for not mentioning the obvious connection between White Privilege and the threat from Super-Volcanos.
:)
Right on point, the failure to mention Indonesia, Kamchatka and the African rift, certainly makes me think this article is nonsense to get Americans all stirred up, attracting many clicks. Well it seems to have worked since we all were attracted to read and comment.

And here our administration told us man made globull warmung was our greatest threat...
And the “hot spot” which caused the eruptions is gone also? Are you sure it will not erupt or is that a guess, theory, opinion?
What about the Siberian hot spot?
More cow bells too.
A 7 point on that fault would equal a 9 in other places because of the soil. But, the cascadia fault will go before. Quite possibly within the next few years or even months. That one will be around 9 plus and whipe out nealy every man made structure west of I 5. It will most likely destroy Seattle and do a good job on Portland Ore...which isnt a real bad thing.
The cascadia fault is a 600 mile or more potential rupture. Matter of fact, they find that the distortion is so vast that the moutians have risen several feet because of it. When it goes, all that snaps back in place...in about 5 to 7 minutes.
This fault pops in average every 240 years like clockwork. Last time it went was 1700.
Do we know the Cascadia Fault would erupt prior to New Madrid? In any event, consequences of either would be horrific.
It's being done here in Idaho. The Capitol building and a few others in downtown Boise are heated using geothermal energy.
Well...if you look at history, the cascadia went before the new madrid. The new madrid is another animal by itself.
I am using my old tab typing this so please excuse my writting. The touch pad is crap.
Anyway, the danger of the new madrid is the ground. Sand blows, liqification of the soil, etc.
I have a neighbor who is a geologist here and we often watch the youtube vids of the buildings swaying during the Japan quake. Shocking! Those buildings not only swayed, they seemed to quiver near the top. You can actually hear the groaning as they sway. And Tokyo was some distance away from the epicenter. The Cascadia is right off the coast from the west coast cities.
15 to 20 minutes for the wave to hit on the west coast. If you want to see the devastation, watch the youtube vids of the destructin during the Japan
quake. You will feel it all the way to the Mississippi river valley. Not much, but you will feel it.
Thanks for the comeback. California would probably ban it though.
I read all these predictions & some of the dating of past occurrences & it makes me think that many of these folks need to go back & read what it says in Genesis 1.
Makes sense to use it locally, however transporting thermal energy could be a problem. Iceland is small and has a lot of thermal energy. The USA is big.
I would think that thermal energy could be a good source of heating within a city. Also, a side effect would be a slight cooling of the source. What I don’t know is if that would also be beneficial or be potentially more hazardous.
Global Warming, dontchaknow.
I live 100 miles inland from the ocean, about 500 feet above sea level and far enough inland from Puget Sound that I don’t have to worry about tsunmais or “sloshing” of the Sound. However, the tremors will most certainly shake the living hell out of our neighborhood in the event of a ‘full 9 rip’ of the Cascadia.
Seattle is gonna be pretty much toast. Tacoma...not much better.
