A major conference held in New York on Friday, December 19th raised hopes for the future of the deadly civil war in Syria coming to a final end. However, Iran is the only party left out actually concerned over its interests gone with the wind after such extensive strategic capitalization and secret war in the Levant and its vicious dictator Bashar Assad.
Seeking to find a solution for the crisis in Syria, various parties involved in this conflict - including the Syrian opposition - joined the top diplomats of 20 different countries in this third international meeting on Syria, after the two previous summits were held in Vienna. The Syrian opposition held a 3-day summit in Saudi Arabia from December 8th to the 10th to elect a delegation to represent all opposition groups. In addition to accomplishing this important objective, they also reached a critical agreement on the necessity to resolve the Syria crisis through political means based on the Geneva statement and United Nations resolutions. This in itself is a very significant and unprecedented feat.
Prior to the New York summit, U.S. State Department John Kirby had described its goal as increasing diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the political crisis in Syria, while also intensifying the fight against ISIS.
The New York summit was important considering the fact that immediately afterwards the U.N. Security Council issued a resolution on Syria under which a ceasefire is to be imposed in Syria starting January. Such international efforts are needed to deescalate a very complicated situation. While little has been published about the details of the New York summit, from the statements made and various press reports one can reach a significant conclusion in this regard.
World powers having stakes and interests in Syria, and quite intent on focusing their attention over the global threat of ISIS, have come close to reaching an agreement on a road map to end the civil war in Syria, CNN reported. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry referred to an agreement over a plan of actions and the recent vote in the U.N. Security Council is a very important leap aiming for a political transition in Syria.
U.S. President Barack Obama once again stressed on the very important fact that Assad must step down to end the bloodshed in Syria. One has to hope this American leader will bring an end to his "leading from behind" policy and make serious decisions about a strategy shift in the Middle East. Serious action is needed to prevent Syria from completely falling to Iran.
Al Arabiya TV cited the Syrian coalition political delegation in emphasizing the importance of the U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254 as a reflection of a global agreement over the general framework of reaching a political solution for the Syria crisis. However, an important matter remains. The Syrian opposition coalition raised its own criticism regarding the UNSC resolution as it failed to refer to Iran- associated militias fighting alongside the Assad regime. This coalition demanded international guarantees for the implementation of this significant resolution, while also warning about the Assad regime's lack of commitment to this international pact.
"Bashar Assad, after the horrific killings he has committed in Syria, cannot be part of the transition process," said senior Syrian opposition official Mohammad Yahiya. In the meantime, what remains a mystery is the position of Iran as the main ally of Bashar Assad and main supporter of radical Islamic terrorism. While senior officials in Tehran, such as Khamenei advisor Ali Akbar Velayati and deputy foreign ministry Amir Abdullahian have in their own circles emphasized heavily on supporting the Assad regime, other reports depict a completely different picture.
Japan Times website, citing Reuters, referred to the remarks of an Iranian official speaking on the condition of anonymity: "Iran has decided to unify its stance with Russia's in the push for a political deal to end Syria's civil war, Iranian officials said... While maintaining its firm backing for Assad in public, Russia has recently made clear to Western nations that it has no objection to him stepping down as part of the peace process, diplomats said." This is an unprecedented indication that Iran may have downgraded its opposition with Assad being forced to step down as part of this agreement. Iran's decision to increase its coordination with Russia was made after last month's meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian regime leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
To add further evidence of Iran getting ready to withdraw from Syria are the facts on the ground, including major defeats and series of defeats Tehran and the Lebanese Hezbollah are suffering in Syria. This practically leaves no other choice and rendering nothing but humiliation for the Iranian regime.
Developments in the near future will shed more light on this matter, yet certain is Iran, despite causing turmoil across the globe, suffering a major strategic defeat in the entire Middle East.
