How much revenue could FR generate if ads were sold? I have no idea, but I'll bet someone does.
Of course, Jim has said he would close it down before he went that route.
So the choice is pretty clear cut. Either we support the finances or it goes away.
Wouldn't you hate to see that happen?
It's a pretty simple proposition. Isn't it?
ping
If we had commercials like this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqHZWdFVyyQ
I wouldn’t see any problem with it.
All the losertarians could get Midol ads.
There is nothing like FR out there.
Not all of us agrees with Jim's opinions on everything, or even his opinions on how to run his site. But this is what we've got. It's a pretty damn good site and heads and tails above what the nutjobs at DU work with (which is basically a bulletin board.
People need to pony up.
The internet has spoiled us. Lotsa free stuff out there to read, download and amuse us. We just get used to it and take it as the new norm.
But there are some physical things we pay for, such as newspapers and magazines.
IMO, Free Republic is a news source, much better than the leftist rags people pay for. FR is like one stop shopping in the reading department which has pretty much weened me from news magazines.
My point is, $10 or whatever a month is dirt cheap compared to what I used to pay for hard print governed by the left, where I had to pick and choose.
So I took my own advice and signed up as a monthly donor. I hope others do because I do not want to see FR go away when there is so much important stuff going on out there.
Bump.
Indeed, people need to pony up.
It took me many years to begin supporting FR. Once I was blind, and poverty struck. I am still por but without blinders.
If P&R were conditional would income increase? How many lurkers who never post are supportive? It seems manifestly obvious that the most important posts here are not coming from fee loaders.
Hard to find a nice way to say it. Pony up or sit down.
I’ll renew my monthly donation this week. The Human Fund will just have to wait.
Human Fund Bump, LOL!
Another benefit that would be missed. Sometimes posting on FR is like screaming at your television or at Obama or at Hillary. or at _______
BUT, other folks actually hear you!
An Amazon.com affiliate link could raise a substantial amount.
And involve lawyers, free speech rights, copyright laws....the list is endless.
Amazon.com makes it easy to become an affiliate. At the bottom of the Amazon.com home page, click on “Become an Affiliate.”
It takes you to this page: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/join/landing/main.html
Affiliates earn up to 10% of the gross amount of Amazon purchases.
There is no site quite like FR and your suggestion could get really messy very quickly.
Btw, FR has an attorney because FR was sued by 2 newspapers. No one wants to go there again.
Yes, and another way to look at this is, lets say FR shuts down due to lack of member contributions. And that fact gets out.
What a story WAPO or Politico could get out of that. Such as a headline: “Free Republic Shuts Down Because Conservatives Are Like Everyone Else, They Like Free Stuff”.
Or
“Free Republic Shut Down Proves Conservative Are Hypocrites, They Expect Free Stuff Too”.
You might be right, but I do not follow your argument. If FR had an Amazon affiliate link, I could click on it before making a purchase at Amazon. Then my $12 purchase of a spatula would yield $1 to FR.
Probably most Freepers are already spending big bucks at Amazon, and a lot of that could be a big commission to FR.
How is that a messy issue related to posting opinion and requiring attorneys?
Amazon likes affiliates. Amazon does not send lawyers after affiliates who bring them business.
Also, Amazon is politically neutral, so there is no conflict of interest and no appearance of influence on FR content. I think that addresses the issue of why FR does not have advertising.
No. Amazon isn't politically neutral. Keep an eye on products that they drop. And why.
How big a kick back does an Amazon shill get?
