Hillary Clinton Tried to Join the Army (Or was it the Marines?) James Joyner April 3, 2008
Bill Clinton says his wife, Hillary, tried to join the Army in the mid-1970s but was turned down.
âI remember when we were young, right out of law school, she went down and tried to join the Army and they said âYour eyes are so bad, nobody will take you,'â he said, after heralding her record on issues of concern to the military, such as body armor and access to health care.
I assume this is a version of the âHillary Clinton tried to join the Marinesâ anecdote that then-First Lady Clinton told in 1994 that we wondered about since itâs a story she never seems to have told again.
The original story was that in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1975, Hillary walked into a local Marines recruiting office. The Marine recruiter looked at her, she recalled, and asked how old she was. Twenty-seven, she said. âHe looked at me, and in those days that was before I learned how to wear contact lenses,â Sen. Clinton told a crowd of women veterans in 1994. âI had these really thick glasses on. He said, âHow badâs your eyesight?â I said, âits pretty bad.â â¦Finally said to me, he said, âYouâre too old. You canât see. And youâre a womanâ¦.But maybe the dogs would take you.'â
(âDogsâ being a reference to the Army.)
Perhaps she did so â and hence Bill Clintonâs Army story today?
Or maybe heâs conflating the two stories?
(Add that Bosnian sniper fire, and you might have something there that Julia Roberts would want to option.)
Does anyone really believe after graduating Yale at the top of her class, she wanted to join the military?

What a complete load of horse crap!
I suspect the truth is that the brass was more concerned about the potential for eye damage among her brethern-in-arms.
Hillary, tried to join the Army in the mid-1970s but was turned down because she is Mentally Unstable
Did she want to go into a logistics unit and bake cookies for the troops?
She was I. The WACkoes. Still is
Father says, "Your mother's right
She's really up on things
Before we married, Mommy served
In the WACS in the Philippinesâ
Now, I had heard the WACs recruited
Old maids for the war
But mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years
This story is impossible to either validate or invalidate. Perfect for the liar in chief to tell.
Yeah - she was the toughest Green Beret Recon Ranger SEAL that Delta Force ever had. She was Kerry’s CO when she ordered him into Cambodia on that Christmas day...it’s seared into both of their memories...
Political can go back to 1969 to produce a lie about Dr. Ben Carson, but won’t go back to check on this Hillary lie. Gee what a surprise!
The story as reported about 1992 was she was quoted as trying to join the Marines. I remember when that was a major story in the Arkansas newspapers.
As to Bosnia... I currently work with a guy who was greeting her plane. No hostile fire occurred.
But did the Marine story really happen. No. She has been lying all her life.
Unrelated, but a question to Freepers:
Anyone know why lately when copying and pasting text into a thread that the odd characters appear, especially apostrophes?
Of course, neither Hillary nor Bill can talk about it.
But she’s one of those super duper secret special ops, that’s why she was under sniper fire running on tarmac on a super duper secret mission. That’s how American public can trust her as CinC.
This trying to join the Army/Marines/whatever, it is all just a smoke screen......
BA(neverbeen)M
Someone please tell her that attending anti war protests in the 60’s does not mean she wanted to join the military. Didn’t Bill run to Canada to avoid the draft?
She HEARD them say "eyes," but what they actually SAID was "thighs." A perfectly understandable error when you stop and think about it.
Mr. niteowl77
What is so amazing is that the young girl on the tarmac waiting to give Hillary flowers wasn’t hit or bothered by any gunfire..........who are these people w/ absolutely no shame about making up enormous lies?????
She was 27 then, she said, and the Marine recruiter was about 21. She was interested in joining either the active forces or the reserves, she recalled, but was swiftly rebuffed by the recruiter, who took a dim view of her age and her thick glasses. ‘Not Very Encouraging’
“You’re too old, you can’t see and you’re a woman,” Mrs. Clinton said she was told, adding that the recruiter dismissed her by suggesting she try the Army. “Maybe the dogs would take you,” she recalled the recruiter saying.
