Why won't middle class people shop at Walmart?

Walmart's stock took a steep drop as the company announced that it was expecting lower profits. There are a number of problems Wal-mart has, such as its website and fulfillment not being quite as good as Amazon.com, but Wal-mart is primarily a brick and mortar store, not an internet company.

The basic problem as I see it is that middle class people are afraid to shop there. If you look at reviews on Yelp one of the most common words used to describe Wal-mart is "ghetto". There is even a Yahoo question on this very topic:

Why is every Walmart so ghetto? Why? I have never walked into any Walmart without feeling like I was going to be mugged, even in a nice area. I know the prices are very convenient, but still. I don't see why every Walmart attracts gangs, druggies, and sometimes even hookers. I've actually seen all those things at a Walmart before, including a man wearing a thong....

I prefer Walmart to other stores assuming they have the same merchandise. They have a better return policy than most places.

Of course I live in a very “red” state, so we don’t have the crazies quite so much.

I seldom go to Wal Mart, but I do go to Sam’s. I prefer Costco to both. I would never go to Wal Mart unarmed, though.

My WalMart... "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

Get out of the Ghetto and into small town America and you will find that the Walmarts are full of “Middle-Class” people.

Mrs BN & I love Walmarts and I’d guess we are solidly Middle-Class. (ain’t Rich, ain’t Poor - jest right!)

:-)

Walmartians.

Once “they’ see no resistance to going in in bedroom attire, its just a small step to absurd and next it’ll be like visiting a West African village. At least the illegals dress better.

Maybe Walmart sees the lack of dress are a shoplift preventative.

Walmarts are just a reflection of the neighborhoods they’re located in.

****************

Bingo and the reflection goes to the other commercial establisments in the area.

I shop there. Mornings are best, less human waste to shop along side. I buy cleaning products, toiletries and last year I found some t-shirts to buy. Not this year, they have nothing. Found my t-shirts at Sam’s this year. I hate to spend too much on stuff to wear while at home doing housework. And I hate to overspend on cleaning supplies. Besides. The Works is the only toilet cleaner that will take mineral deposits out with barely any effort. Love that stuff, never found any other store that carried it.

“Why is every Walmart so ghetto?”

Author’s statement is myopic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his chin permanently rests at 45 degree angle. Travel to a more affluent neighborhood and you will find better retailers. We have no reservation whatsoever of going to our local neighborhood Walmart. It’s clean, employees are polite and helpful, and surprise- no freaks walking around. We like it, and see neighborhood kids and retirees all working there.

If the author is visiting a retailer (of any brand) that is adjoined by a police substation, pawn shops, payday loans, and gov’t funded housing... odds are it will not be a good one.

Walmart in Cedar Rapids, IA (Blairs Ferry Rd location) used to be charmingly white-trashy & ghetto-y.

Bored? Go to Walmart, you’d see something entertaining.

We stopped by a few months ago on a visit to town...the Crackers were gone, the Chicago ghetto moms in scooters with 5 destructive screaming kids in tow...MIA.

It was Third World awful. Hajibs & Espagnol ruled that day.

We got our **** and got out. Pretty scary.

Glad things are different in my neck of the woods. I got to Wal-Mart pretty regularly to buy ammo. It’s the cheapest around and Federal or Remington ammo is the same stuff no matter where you buy it. Our local Wal-Marts are no different than any other department store I’ve ever been in. The only small thing is sometimes you have to wait several minutes for someone to show up and unlock the ammo case.

I shop Walmart on occasion. Certain items are much cheaper there than in my regular supermarket. Same brand, same item, cheaper price. So when I happen to be close to the Walmart, I stock up on those items.

I don't see that much underclass at my Walmart, possibly because there is no public transportation to that shopping area.

I think some companies make bargain brand stuff for big boxes, but not all of them do, by a long shot.

I compare between Kroger, Ingals, and Home Depot (for tools, supplies, etc.) and they all have the same premium brands. WM is generally cheaper. Store brands are different and vary by store, though.

Also, TVs, computers, cameras, etc. in WM are generally no different than anywhere else as are CDs, DVDs, and the like..

Awful lot of good people from Maine employed by LL Bean. Last I knew, all of their customer support was stateside (in Maine? I think...) as well.

Mornings are best, less human waste to shop along side.

Well, true. But that's also true most anywhere, really. EBT/SNAPPers don't get up that early. It upsets their little psyches.

I agree, the check out is painfully slow with not enough registers open.

Ooooh. A fun thread.

In answer to the question, the brand is destroyed for all but the EBT set. In truth I do shop there on occasion and it is deeply entertaining. I really enjoy it. It’s a class of people I’d otherwise never be exposed to. Ghetto doesn’t begin to describe the experience.

But alas, the reason I go shopping is to buy something and WalGhetto is FAIL on that measure. Constantly out of stock and I rarely get thru the check out in less than 20 minutes. So outside of the entertainment value it just doesn’t make sense.

Also, with regards to pricing, I’ve noticed that other, better run stores aren’t really that more expensive. And ALDI is way cheaper. So why bother with WalGhetto?

Don’t shop at either Walmart or Target.

I used to .. but since I’ve had to shop online more .. I have had too many issues with Walmart stuff not being as the picture showed.

Target, had a fit one Christmas season, and forbid the Salvation Army from being anywhere near the entrance to their stores in the malls. That’s when I quit going there.

If it’s middle America who is protesting these stores, I totally understand .. and I think it’s just more of the rebellion against anything UNION; anything not supporting American values (American flag); anything not supporting our troops, police, etc.

Every place where the unions rule, product seems to be second class. Why, you ask ..?? Well, it’s like this: When you (as a company), have to pay the union’s demands, you end up having to raise wages (even when a raise is not deserved); you end up having to give your employees Cadillac health plans; etc. What this does is cut into the company’s profit margin - therefore, the company has LESS MONEY TO BUY BETTER PRODUCTS TO SELL. See how that works ..?? And, in order to keep costs down, you have to allow the unions to dictate WHO YOU CAN AND CANNOT HIRE.

If Americans don’t rise up and get rid of these unions; they will bankrupt America.

I do not give a rip if anybody agrees with me.

Similar problem as McDonalds if you ask me.

Horrible employees and horrible customers.

My esteem for all of mankind takes a nosedive every time I enter a Walmart.
