This showed up in my FB newsfeed today, regarding something that occurred earlier this week while I was in Colorado:
Things got awkward on Monday when Donald Trump asked an Asian-American college student if he was from South Korea.A 20-year-old Harvard economics major identified by NPR as Joseph Choe had launched into a query about South Korea during a question-and-answer session at the No Labels-hosted Problem Solver Convention in New Hampshire.
"I just had a really quick question about something you said earlier this summer," Choe said in video captured by C-SPAN. "Basically, you said that South Korea takes advantage of the United States in terms of the defense spending on the Korean peninsula. You said that they don't have to pay anything. However, I just want to get the facts straight and say that --"
Trump interrupted to ask, "Are you from South Korea?"
"I'm not. I was born in Texas, raised in Colorado," Choe responded.
The GOP presidential candidate shrugged as awkward laughter from the audience escalated into full-blown cheering for Choe.
"No matter where I'm from, I like to get my facts straight, and I wanted to tell you that that's not true. South Korea paid $861 million," Choe said before Trump cut him off again.
I don't believe Trump's question was totally unreasonable. Watch the video. In context, the student is defending/standing up for an Asian country. Choe looks rather Asiatic. Is it completely unwarranted to question motive and bias through possible ethnic ties? After all, people all the time do show loyalty, favoritism, connection, etc. to their ancestral country/ethnic origins.
Incidentally, this isn't the first time Joseph Choe has spoken out on behalf of Korean interests. He seems to be involved in Korean politics and interests. Back in April, he confronted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe regarding Korean comfort women:
A Korean-American Harvard University student is gaining attention in South Korea for a question he asked Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe regarding comfort women.Harvard student Joseph Choe put the Prime Minister on the spot during his April 27 visit to Harvard Universitys Kennedy School when he asked him to clarify his position on the Japanese governments involvement in coercing Korean women and girls into sexual slavery during World War II.
Yes. Joseph Choe is an American, born in Texas and raised in Colorado. But he is ethnically tied by ancestry to Korea; and seems to have an interest in Korea. Whether it is relevant to the larger point or not on American military expenditure and bases in Korea, it at least provides Trump with a contextualization for where the source of Choe's interest in the topic may be coming from.
So basically, Trump's instincts were correct and he had Choe's number correct.

As Rush said, conservatives who don’t stick to conservative principles at all times and fall for liberal shibboleths, turn into liberals. As you’ve perfectly demonstrated by believing (or pretending to believe) that Trump is a “racist” for asking an innocent question.
Now why don’t you go lay down in a dark room and slap a cool compress across your head.
The point is that a candidate is foolish to agree to a platform like that, where any questioner can hide behind the “no labels” mask and really be a hit man for a particular party, opposing candidate, or ideology.
Hey, Choe...who gives a rat’s ass what SK pays? The American tax payer foots a huge bill for our military to protect countries like yours and many countries in Europe...so that they can spend that money on socialist programs.
I say it’s time to pack up our military from all of those countries and let them sink economically or be taken over since they haven’t the revenue to rebuild their militaries.
Exactly. It’s one thing to not like or support Trump. But for conservatives to throw around the R word in order to take him down is quite another.
what gave him the hint that this guy was KOREAN??????
amswer that and perhaps we can talk.. okey dokey
Ah yes...we all did that! And the answers ranged from which county in Ireland, Scotland, England, France, northern or southern Italy...where in Portugal. .or Poland or Scandinavia. It was fun, it was interesting and harmless. We were diverse, but no one told us we HAD to be. In the end, we were just happy to be American.
The best part was how well we ate when someone’s grandmother from the old country started cooking.
This is Friday, so I am a bit tired. Are you serious?
If you watched the video, you will see that Trump did answer the question. But the kid was too busy talking to someone else to learn the answer. Does that answer your question?
Obviously, you picked the correct moniker for yourself. You’re not even making sense for a crazy person.
Another plant, like “Clock Boy.”
Yes. He’s all over twitter in Korean - another “activist” college child hoping to have a career in activism and world saving. And yet there are folks here crying over his brutal treatment at the hands of mean old white man Trump.
It was perfectly appropriate.
Trump was trying to ascertain whether the boy (yes, I use that term to put him down, because he was a plant) was of SK descent and whose loyalties were still with SK.
If a woman in a Burqa stood up and started trying to “get the facts straight” regarding terrorism in Syria, it would be apropos of any candidate to ascertain whether they were from that country and had some personal, vested interest in asking the question.
Unfortunately, the observations you’ve made based upon life with your wife, are true for nearly all immigrants.
Indians care about India or Indians in this country.
Asians for Asia and Asians.
Islamists for the CalipHate and Muslims.
Latinos for their South-of-the-Border countries and Latinos.
However, if white Americans dare say anything in defense of our heritage and culture...they call us the racists.
Actually - lets look at it a different way than you’re saying.
If there’s a slight obvious visual possibility that the questioner has a vested or sentimental interest in the matter at hand - the person answering would be foolish NOT to consider that and answer with a more astute perspective and empathy. That’s just the way the world is made.
What could be considered racist if Choe said “No, I’m from China” and Trump cavalierly said “Same difference...” - but he didn’t. I think it’s more of what I said - a desire to empathize with the perspective the questioner asks from.
WOW - it’s as if you hacked my computer and cut paste and sent before I had to - the same answer!! - Nice going!
nuancing this isnt chaniging the corfe principle whatsover
it may not have been EVIL or even WRONG in the most strict semse.of the word .but it was FOOLISH...for reasons ive already covered quite well enough.
Freegards
well - I WILL give you that - the Foaming-Media will try to make it a ‘Makaka’ moment
a remark which would be right at home on THE DEMOGOGUE UNDERGROUND
adios
There all praying for that “Macaca moment that will end Trump’s campaign like it did to George Allen. I’m sure even some here would applaud that.
thank you!
when your fighting the beast..you need to be painfully aware
