Conspiracy theorists are working overtime to explain why Walmart suddenly closed 5 stores in 3 states this week, laying off 2200 workers. The stores are expected to reopen in 6 months.
The company claims the closings are releated to ongoing and pervasive plumbing problems. But the conspiracy theorists believe it has more to do with workers who took part in the Black Friday strike than with faulty sewers.
Business Insider:
Wal-Mart employees say they were completely blindsided by the news, having been notified only a couple hours before the stores closed at 7 p.m. Monday.
"Everybody just panicked and started crying," Venanzi Luna, a manager at a store in Pico Rivera, California, told CNN Money.
All workers will receive paid leave for two months. After that, full-time workers could become eligible for severance, according to CNN Money. But part-time workers will be on their own.
Local officials and employees have questioned Wal-Mart's reasoning for the closures.
According to ABC News, "no plumbing permits have been pulled in any of the five cities where the stores were suddenly closed for at least six months." The cities where locations were closed include: Brandon, Florida; Pico Rivera, California; Livingston, Texas; Midland, Texas; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Which is just great. Where do I go to get a new needle? Wal-Mart of course.
Say, did you see that thread titled: Citi Economist: Abolish Cash (People Should Have to Pay Banks to Use Money)
I read that one location that was closing had over 200 plumbing issues in
the last two years. I don’t remember which article I saw that in.
If thats true then they would be opening up new sections devoted to EBT,WICs and SNAP selections ONLY

I think you’re onto something there. That’s the new shopping cohort. They have the time, they have the plastic. How to market to this segment? lol
A real Walmartian.
Walmart has some problems and not just union problems. Walmart is suffering from a lot more competition and honestly their current management is largely made up of pretenders who are running a disjointed ship where one hand is working against the other. A decade and half ago Walmart had visionaries at the helm. Now all the people who built the company are mostly gone or dead and have been replaced with people who don’t understand that the bottom line of their success is middle America. Those bible believing, gun toting, patriots who have been increasingly marginalized in the popular culture outside of the bright spots like Duck Dynasty are no longer loyal to Walmart and nor should they be.
This isn’t a hit at you, and your relative’s connection aside, why the heck does it have any more importance to anybody else’s guess, interpretation or soothsaying on the matter. Frankly, the hours thing isn’t because of WalMart; it is a DIRECT result of Obamacare. If you don’t realize that then I don’t know what to tell you.
Regardless of local lore, they aren’t privy to the in-store/same store model, nor are they privy to other influences they wouldn’t be subjected to as a normal employee.
The point is Walmart OWNS that store and many others. As long as they do, until government takes it away from them and pays the taxes, they are responsible to the investors. Government, as yet, hasn’t made that illegal, but I suspect they will. They already have on-book laws that dictate to large employers what actions they contemplate that will affect employees.
They have upscaled the Walmarts, at least a number from what I know if you are talking about finding all the goodies you currently like, I think you were talking about ethnic foods.
Walmart is fine with me. Tends to be often too crowded.
You need to get there earlier around 8-9 AM. The EBT crowd don't like to get up and go out before 10:30 or 11:00...It upsets their routine.
Just having a little fun with your “addiction”. We all have them. I meant no disrespect.
FEMA Wants to House Migrant Children in Empty Big Box Stores
Warehouses and shopping malls are also being considered

+1 Good post.
Businesses do lose their edge.
I agree with your comment. It is a way to get rid of those employees who supported joining the unions and send a message to their other employees who might be contemplating doing the same thing. Yes it is a good thing!
Probably have 2 or more stores so close to each other they end up competing against each other.
Well, if Walmart were to say “We closed these stores to kill unionization attempts,” can you imagine the caterwauling from democrats and media? The spittle-flecked outrage, while entertaining, would be toxic beyond belief. ;)
I try to go weekday mornings. Today, for instance, it would be a zoo.
Yes my money is on union busting,
If I would have suggested or predicted some of the crazy things that would eventually happen under the Obama regime you probably would have said the same thing (i.e., where do I get a new needle?). But look where we are today. The unthinkable has become commonplace.
“My guess its a good way to get rid of Union trash that has been causing problems. Good on them!”.......
And MY guess is you are correct.
I once worked for a small engineering firm who’s president openly stated, “If one son-of-a-bitch ever tries to start a union here, I will close this company down”. Though dead long ago, his words hold true today and that same company, much larger today, continues to operate WITHOUT a union.
One closed around here a few years ago near the edge of fragile neighborhoods. They had another reason, but some said that store had a huge problem with theft.
Just another hypothesis to throw into the mix: Maybe after what happened in Ferguson last year, chains might be wise to close stores now in areas that are candidates for chaos.
You sir are incorrect. My sister in law went on nights at WM 12 years ago in order to keep her full time, 40 hours a week, status. The part time status of most of the workers has to do with being eligible for company benefits. WM implemented this policy long before most knew Obama’s name. Knowing what the facts are before you post such a definitive statement is always a good idea.
