I’ve run into similar issues because I refuse to throw out things that work (even partially ie DVD but not VCR in a combo). Sometimes you just have to go with what gets you up and running. Got a new dig tv this winter - couldn’t hook up anything with coax. So it was back to multi cables for the VHS/DVD combo.

Have you tried hooking the composite cables directly to your tv, bypassing the rf modulator?
If that doesn’t work new tv’s are cheap.

Certainly not a hi-tech A/V guy but if its all being broadcast through standard def TV, I would connect the DVD player with the S-video, the DVR/broadcast with the composite cables, and the over the air signal with the coax.

The component connection is going to be highest quality (absent HDMI). There are switch boxes that allow you to plug multiple components into the box and switch between sources (multiple inputs, one output in other words).

yes, but the DVD VCR wouldn’t come on- I hooked everything up per instrucitons, but could not get the DVD to play- the blue screen for DVD would come up, but it would never load the DVD- the only way I could get the DVD to load and play is through the using the RF modulator for some reason

I'm not a technical person, but in my spare bedroom, I have the cable box connected to the TV with just regular cable wires. Then I have a small non-region DVD player connected to the TV using the yellow, red, and white audio/video cables. I also have a DVD/VCR, but don't use it since you can't record any cable programs on it anyway due to copyright laws. I only used it to copy old VHS tapes I had onto DVDs. I did have it hooked up to the TV at one time, but I can't remember how I did it. Sorry.

My oldest son bought me a new Roku this past Christmas, and put the old one in the spare room he uses when he comes to visit. It's also hooked up to the TV with yellow, red, and white cables, and accesses live streaming wirelessly in my apartment.

Well that’s the proble,. I can go component from cable to DVD, but then I would have to use another type from the DVD to the RF modulator- perhaps S-Video, but once it gets to the modulator, then I’m forced back down to coaxial which goes out to the TV- so I would think that steady downgrading from component, to S-Video, to coaxial would I think defeat the whole premise of higher quality picture?

TV, cable box, vcr/dvd each have:
> composite connectors yellow/white/red,
> component blue/green/red,
> 1 S-Video connector

Connect the cable to the TV via the component connectors and the vcr/dvd to the TV via the composite connectors. The TV will have a selector for the source

If all 3 of your devices have S- video, use a S video switch box ( just Google it ). If all three have a component, use a component switch box. Same goes for the RCA connections. In other words, what one is common for all 3, get a switch box for it.

that’s originally what I wanted to do, hook a small personal DVD player up using just the red white tallow cables, as needed for viewing DVD’s, but we bought a full DVD/VCR combo instead, and found out it won’t play unless we have the RF modulator hooked up as well- not sure why the RF modulator is needed because the TV has red/white/yellow connections on it s well as S-Video connection- should be able to just hook directly from DVD to TV- but when I try- it simply won’t play the DVD- the only way it will play is if I use the modulator for some reason

Do NOT run composite and S-video. You should use on of them (I suggest S-video).

The types of analog connections are getting pretty rare — HDMI is a lot easier — just plug and go.

I don’t know if anyone will get even be able get now that Radio Shack is all nut gone.

thanks I’ll give that a try- didn’t think about doing it that way- hopefully it’ll work- I suppose I don’t really need high quality connection for DVD as it’s pretty high quality picture already-

Not sure what you mean about TV having a selector for the source though?
