The government of Italy appears to be taking seriously the threats posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) to its nation. Italian officials said on Monday that they are considering sending 5,000 troops into Libya to combat the country’s burgeoning jihadist presence. In a recent video purportedly produced by the Islamic State’s Libya affiliate, the group slaughtered twenty-one Christians and vowed to seek out Rome as its next target. “And we will conquer Rome, by Allah’s permission, the promise of our prophet, peace be upon him,” a North American English-accented militant leader said after his comrades slaughtered the Christian hostages. Italian Defense Minister Robert Pinotti said that the 5,000 troops were ready and willing to lead a unilateral mission if necessary. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Monday that “the proposal is to wait, so the U.N. Security council can work with a bit more conviction on Libya” in reaching a diplomatic accord, the Associated Press reported. The Italian head of state said that the U.N. should recruit “all the players, the local tribes, African Union countries, Arab countries, the Europeans” to fight ISIS in Libya.

The truth is all Italy could muster was 5000 troops. They cut their military by 40% and they are broke.
ISIS is threatening them.
seriously?? really?? The last time Italy ventured militarily into north Africa, they couldn’t organize a one truck convoy and the German Afrika Corp had to be created to come help them. Only problem is, this time the German Army is no better than Italy’s.
There are about 5 different factions fighting for control of Libya. As far as I can determine, the Libya Parliament in exile in Tobruk is the “legitimate” government of that hellhole.
The Italians fought harder than Germans in Tunisia in WW2, they were prepared to fight to the last man while the Germans were surrendering.
Meanwhile the Vichy French forces didn’t really want to be there and by then was trying not to even take sides.

When I was in Italy the Carabinieri were the only competent police force in the entire country. Americans in road accidents were taught to call for Carabinieri (they could not be bought).
And they rode around in Alfa-Romeo Giulietta sedans, not little Fiat 500’s.
Anyway, I hope someone reminds Italy that when Muammar Gaddafi seized power in 1969 he threatened to desecrate the graves of Italian WWII dead.
IIRC, Italians have already stood up to Muslim demands for segregated beaches.
