Brasília (AFP) - Brazilian scientists have discovered a protein in coffee that has effects similar to pain reliever morphine, researchers at the state University of Brasilia (UnB) and state-owned Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Embrapa said Saturday.
Embrapa said its genetics and biotech division, teaming up with UnB scientists, had discovered "previously unknown protein fragments" with morphine-like effects in that they possess "analgesic and mildly tranquilizing" qualities.

I can’t remember the last time I sat down with a bunch of guys for morning coffee. If I ever did, there weren’t that many of us and we would’ve been a whole lot younger.
BUT NO ID TO VOTE -- that would be raaaaacist...
Bump to read to spouse.
Saw this, though of you, don’t know why...
Arab coffee: Thick sweetened coffee served at gunpoint.
Probably for the fact that coffee has a mellowing effect on me?
Aaaack! Sugar in coffee is horrible.
It’s like sugar or syrup on grits, or oatmeal. Sacrilegious,
IMHO.
I take my coffee totally black, two cups in the morning, and I’m done. If I drank it later, I’d be jazzed all day, and wouldn’t sleep at night.
(But my very old Granny drank it late in the evening, to HELP her sleep. Go Figure...)

Does anyone remember those old guys who would saucer their coffee? I had three different Uncles who did that.
The same thing happens to me. Always thought it was weird.
I have to drink coffee before bedtime or I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.
