Dogs and Guns Prove Effective in Ohio Countryside
Gun Watch ^ | 27 October, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

Dogs and guns have been an effective crime stopping combination for as long as people have possessed them.   They were proven effective once again in Butler County, Ohio.   The suspect broke out a basement window to gain access to the rural home of Brian Hiner.    Brian woke to the alarmed barks of his dogs, which appear to black and golden Labradors.  He then heard the intruder coming up the basement stairs, called the sheriff, and held Michael Roberts, pictured above, at gunpoint for the responding deputies.

The deputies arrived, and took Roberts into custody.    Somehow, Roberts managed to escape the deputies vehicle while Brian was being interviewed.   The suspect fled into a nearby cornfield.

A few hours later, 15 year old, Justin Kugler was home alone, sick, when he heard his dogs start barking.  He armed himself and looked downstairs, just in time to see Roberts enter the house.   Justin is on the left in the screenshot above.  From 14news.com:

"I was home sending an email to my teachers about homework when my dogs started barking and I looked out the window but I didn't see anybody there so I went to the top of the stairs with the gun to make sure there wasn't anybody downstairs and then that's when the door opened and I saw him," said Justin Kugler.

Kugler says he was pretty scared because he noticed Roberts had a knife on him, but he was armed and ready for Roberts at the top of the stairs.

"I told him to get out of the house or I'm going to shoot you," said Justin Kugler.

Roberts was taken back into custody just after he exited the Kugler home.

Dogs and guns are a powerful defensive combination that is hard to overcome.   Just as important is a community that trusts the local peace officers to form a cooperative network.   Local residents are the front line, while the sheriff's deputies form the rapid response team and communications network.  In communities that trust their local criminal justice system, the crime rates are very low.   Sheriffs, as elected officials, tend to be responsive to their constituents.

Boy, this guy was brazen!

Dogs, backed up by guns.

The scary thing here is even the dogs’ barking didn’t deter him. These facts make me think indeed he was intoxicated.

Barking is usually good enouh to deter, because they do not want any attention. Such were the Labs.

A good bold Shepherd may deter just by the appearance, and will also cross the line when the crook crosses the line. Not to rip them apart, but grab and make sure they don’t do much.

My motto has been, my dog backed up by my gun. That should be a odg-beware sign.

Lots of big talkers on FR, especially on the dog threads. And firearms threads.

Justified or no, it’s all to the better that a 15 year old didn’t have shooting a man on his conscience.

I agree with you.

So, what would you do if you found this fool in your house coming at you?

I'd shoot him center of mass and shoot him again until he was down.

But if he took off when I encountered him and headed out of my house, I would not be firing at him.

I might try to take out a leg. Keep him on the premises for jailing. Also keeps him from moving on to the next.

i think i was clear about the when. i am not trigger happy. most ccw folks know that the real crapstorm begins after the shots are fired.

honestly, how were any of these people to know they were not in lethal danger. just because the guy ran - the second time - how can you be sure? and when it’s at night and someone’s breaking in, how do you know it’s only a burglar and not a murderer?

That's for Hollywood. Hit the femoral artery, and he's bleed out before you're done with the 911 call.

Don't ever consider shooting only to 'wound'. Only shoot to protect life and then only shoot center of mass.

When the guy turned and ran, they were not in danger.

You shoot a guy in the back half way down the street, you are going to be dealing with the courts. Good luck with that.

what i am saying is before that. you cannot know beforehand when someone is breaking into your house that you aren’t in serious and/or lethjal danger. you can’t know if they are coming for stuff or for you, and if it’smfor stuff, that they won’t kill you if you try to stop them, you can’t know that if they are surprised they won’t try to kill you, or run. you can’t know the guy runs away, to come back later with others, or with a weapon. some surrender only to try to attack you when you are distracted.

I have a greyhound. He would gladly lead any burglar to the refrigerator. Sigh....

LOL

Thanks for the Doberman picture.

We have always had 2 at a time. An heir, and a spare.

We live in a small town. We have a six foot chain link fence in our back yard and three Ridgebacks (African lion hounds).

Those are all good points to consider.

I’m reluctant to shoot anyone, but it would seem extremely aggressive of someone to break into my home given our fence and dogs. Given all of that, I would have to take into consideration that they might well be there to do me harm.

If they try to get past the dogs, then you know that you’ve got a fight on your hands.
