Tattoo removal business booming as inked teens grow up
The Vintage News ^ | 10/13/14

The year is 2001. Eighteen-year-old Rees Barnett impulsively walks into a tattoo parlour and picks the trendiest designs off the wall display: a tribal arm band and a shoulder tribal tattoo. But over the years, both those symbols quickly went from cool to cliché, leaving Barnett with tattoo regret. “Unfortunately, I can’t blame it on booze,” he said. “[It's] one of those bad decisions that you wake up and realize, oh crap, I’m stuck with these.”

Now, at age 32, the pension fund analyst is erasing this part of his past at Precision Laser Tattoo Removal in Toronto. A technician zaps his two tattoos with a laser while Barnett endures much more pain than when he got inked. “It almost feels like you’re getting electrocuted, pinched all at once and times that by 10.” There’s also the painful price tag. In total, he’ll spend an about $5,000 on multiple treatments over the course of about a year. The original tattoos cost him around $400. Barnett says it’s worth it. “It’ll just be nice to think of the tattoos not being there, if I’m going swimming, if I wear a short-sleeved shirt to a company outing.”

People like Barnett are fuelling a booming tattoo removal industry. Tattoos have gone from being something you get in prison or the army to a popular fashion statement. And what’s fashionable one decade may appear horribly outdated in the next.

“I went in thinking a butterfly would be a sweet, feminine tattoo that I wouldn’t regret,” said 31-year-old Dominique Farr as she pulled back her hair to reveal the fading butterfly on her back she got when she was 17. The real estate agent has already endured 10 treatments at Precision Laser to nix it. “It takes away from my fashion sense and it’s just tacky,” she said. “I don’t like it anymore.”

I actually find a small nose stud to be very sexy on the right lady.

Jewelry, piercings, and tattoos fall into the 'less is more' catagory. Indeed some women look great with a small nose stud, but you have to already have the beauty to pull it off. Others have small tattoos that can be quite attractive. The monstrosity prison art popular now with the masses is just horrid and a major league turnoff.

I’m of the same mindset. But it seems that I see more and more people getting them.

Welcome to my life, tattoo
We’ve a long time together, me and you
I expect I’ll regret you
But the skin graft man won’t get you
You’ll be there when I die

I really hate to say it but the level of ignorance on this subject is insane.

yeah, a lot of tattoos look horrid and over done. As someone that has tattoos though, the comments in this thread are some of the most ignorant I’ve ever seen. Every one of my tattoos has a deep meaning. Then again, I’m also someone that doesn’t walk into something without a reason.

There is a perception of low moral character, being a loser, etc. being pushed in this thread in regards to tattoos. It’s quite ignorant. I would think intelligent people would base their opinions on people regarding their achievements rather than a stereotype or other shallow reason.

If you don’t like tattoos, that’s fine, insulting people that have them is no different than what the Left does. Some of the biggest Conservative supporters and contributors have tattoos. Maybe the haters need to go to DU since hate is all what the Left is about.

end rant.

I always reasoned that if I wouldn’t want to wear the same clothes every day, why would I ever consider something as permanent as a tattoo?

I thnk I’m the only person I know without a tat, aside from my mom and son.
I just don’t like needles, otherwise I already would have one. For about 10 years now, I want a small one with just the words “aequitas veritas”
but my guy has 4 and has for years. no regrets amd each one has special meaning to him.

Down here in the part of Alabammy where I reside, not only do you have a whole passel of them with a Panama City license plate inked betwixt tuchis and tailbone, they’re also chain-smoking tanning bed addicts. They look 40 going on pine-box 80. And are arrogantly defensive of it. The Walmartians around here deserve their own special web site for anthropological purposes.

no, I’m taking it up with the people that are making comments out of stupidity and ignorance. There is no difference with how the comments are on this thread compared to the way anti gunners are. Not one difference.

I'm sorry. We are having to deal with the hysterics of the aggrieved gays right now.

Please take a number, and we will get to your aggrieved hysterics in order. Thank you for your patience.

I can think of a difference - one issue relates to personal safety & individual freedom from oppressive government, the other is a fashion statement.

Does that help any?

>>he’ll spend an about $5,000 on multiple treatments over the course of about a year.<<

That’s pretty stupid. You can get a cheese grater at Wal-Mart for just a couple of bucks.
