MLive reported Sept. 30 that Amtraks Blue Water line from Port Huron to Chicago was offering a ticket deal to celebrate 40 years.
MLive reported: "You'll need to act fast for the ticket deal, which kicks in when a customer purchases one ticket that allows them to purchase a companion ticket for 40 percent off."
For the Record says: Only in the subsidized world of public transit can a company celebrate an anniversary with deals despite years of being in the red. The Blue Water line lost $3.2 million in 2012, $2.3 million in 2013, and as of July 2014 was $900,000 in deficit. Michigan spends $40.6 million, $98.11 per roundtrip passenger, to subsidize its Amtrak lines.

Whenever I see a thread about trains, I am reminded of Willie Green.
Wonder whatever happened to Boxcar Willie?
He must be on that union organizing radio show that comes out of Pittsburgh. They are always fawning all over Amtrak, how wonderful it is, and how we really ought to write them a blank check to build high speed rail.
He died 15 years ago.
Speaking for myself, I’d rather subsidize Amtrak than EBT.
I don’t know what AMTRAK does that can’t be done quicker and cheaper by a low-cost commuter airline without taxpayer subsidies.

EBT~
Bingo. Say what you want about railways but in case of major crisis like WWIII or another Extinct Event it would be the lifelines of civilization. You can’t overestimate their strategic value.
By all means, subsidize it. Just leave the taxpayers out of it.
When Megabus is selling online tickets for a little as a dollar, how is Amtrak supposed to survive? Or why?
