Don Mullen: Why dont Americas hotels provide hair products for black as well as white hair? Is there a way to get them to correct this micro-aggression?
Jenée Desmond-Harris: Thanks for your question.
I thought about the issue of hotel toiletries when I was writing the Race Manners column that answered the question, Is Using Lotion a Black Thing? In my opinion, the tiny moisturizer that most hotels provide is very clearly not designed for those who want or need to use it on their entire body (read: most black people).
But off the top of my head, Im not so sure about the shampoo and conditioner selection as a micro-aggression.
Heres why: I would argue that hotels tend to provide very basic hair-care products for people who dont have any particular hair needs and/or just plain dont care about their hair aside from making sure its clean. (I mean, really, what other kind of person would just lay themselves at the mercy of Marriott and take whatever scent and level of conditioning was provided, never having tried the products before?)
Really, no one who needs or wants anything special for their hairblack or whiteis particularly well served by hotel products. Thats why it seems to me that most people (especially most people with more than an inch of hair) pack what they need or prefer while traveling....

My scalp itches like crazy if I don’t shampoo every day.
TSA imposed the restriction
“Microagression “ is so small and insignificant that only the perpetually aggrieved who are committed to finding it can actually see it.
Well I sure feel safer. /s
When I started traveling decades ago, I stayed in a lot of cheap hotels that didn’t always provide the amenities. I always carried my own soap, shampoo, shaving cream, whatnot. As I don’t expect hotels to provide shaving cream for me, I don’t expect them to always have soap and shampoo. Some people look for racism in everything.
Would they prefer hotel REAL poo?
Micro-aggression is the new liberal buzz word. They are constantly striving to think up new terms to signify their dissatisfaction with America.
I have very long hair. The amount of shampoo in a hotel sample isn’t enough,,I need two or three. So I just bring my own, along with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and facial soap.
It’s not a big deal. You can get 3 oz bottles for 3 for a dollar at the dollar store. Fill them up with shampoo, conditioner, or liquid soap if you prefer that to bar.
Or since I don’t fly anymore, I just bring my regular stuff. Like I said, it’s really no biggie.
I have curly hair; washing with shampoo every day would ruin it, totally strip it. I use shampoo every four days; on the other days, I “co-wash” with conditioner, like a lot of curly haired females. It doesn’t strip, but cleans the hair and scalp, even after working out.
That’s because it’s dry maybe from over shampooing? Just try going a month without washing it! I used to have bad dandruff and itchy, dry scalp and my doctor told me to quit washing it so much - that was 20 odd years ago and I still have a vintage bottle of Head and Shoulders in the washroom. ;-)
One day I had a tube of toothpaste that was almost all gone.
About 1/2 oz of paste left. I took it on travel, after reading TSA rules of “not over 3 oz. of liquids or gels.”
TSA agent (using term loosely) said it was too big, over the 3 oz limit. (Original size was maybe 6 or 8 oz.) So I said, I will give you the paste, but your rules say ...
Well, I have to take it. I quit there, needed to get home, and my 1/2 oz tube was kind of an experiment anyway.
Leaving the airport at my final destination, I asked a higher rank TSA agent why? He said they were concerned about using the containers to mix stuff.
Later the wording was changed to say “containers of more than 3 oz.”
And I feel safer too /s
And I’m sure it was a pure coincidence that right after those restrictions were imposed, that airlines started charging for checked luggage.....yep.
Is the fact that blacks have dry skin a result of slavery? If not, then why is it our problem?
I used to stock personal hygiene products years ago. One of the smelliest things that ever broke was some sort of hair gel for black people. How anyone could wear it is beyond me.
Just FOAD....Really, you’re pathetic and amoral.
You need special hair products, styling gels/sprays, beard softener and particular razor???
Bring your own Shiite.
I like the products at certain hotels and other hotels I know enough to bring what I need or prefer.
You need Magic stinky goo to shave with, then bring it.
Why not say the hotel is also responsible for your peculiarities of coffee, tea, sodas or bubbly water?
The truth is you are self serving narcissist, seeking your own synthetic elevation at someone’s expense.
pay for stuff you want, go to the hotel who provides what you want or bring your own stuff...
ass holes....
Damn NASCAR....
Were you the one who decided The Four Seasons should stock Bulgari products for toiletries?
Capital decision and I love the stuff...that and seems like the chain knows what I like no matter which one I check into...
I would love to see someone post this at DU and pass the popcorn.
I’d have never guessed that black people might suffer from dry skin more than whites, and need to do the whole body. But when I have special needs, I provide them for myself. I don’t expect the whole world to anticipate my needs.
Do hotels in historically black areas or with predominantly black clientele provide bigger containers of lotion?

Its not about the smell its the end result.
And if the end result works that product makes money.
