Portland and South Portland plan to defy the LePage administration and continue offering General Assistance to undocumented immigrants, the group at the center of Maines latest fight over welfare reform.
The Department of Health and Human Services formally notified cities and towns Monday evening that the state will no longer reimburse them for General Assistance to undocumented immigrants and will begin auditing municipalities in October. The memo went out five days after the DHHS announced the policy change in a media release. In a sign of the discord ahead, officials from Portland, South Portland and Bangor said Tuesday that they will continue to offer emergency assistance to undocumented immigrants.
And the Maine Municipal Association, while not explicitly advising communities to defy the DHHS, called it unfortunate that the LePage administration did not follow the normal procedure for making such a major policy change.
Portland officials said they plan to maintain the status quo until they get more guidance from city councilors next month. In May, the city provided about $250,000 in General Assistance to 327 households a total of 613 people who could be affected by the new policy.
The people who receive these benefits depend on them for housing and for food, said City Manager Mark Rees. And to take away those benefits without some discussion about the legality (of the change) or some transitional assistance seems unfair to this group.
Kathleen Babeu, South Portlands General Assistance program manager, said the city will continue providing aid to people in need regardless of their immigration status. Babeu said she had identified about a dozen people or households who would be affected by the policy change.

Good point.
Equally annoying is that US taxpayers handout billions in foreign aid to these do-nothing Third World hellholes--specifically earmarked to subsidize their poverty populations.
Might be time to cut off US aid to these corrupt, do-nothing governments. US aid should be suspended until the countries tell us where the money is going......and demand they put out appropriate messaging to counter the ads said to be fueling the horrendous surge at the border from Central America.
NOTE WELL: US Aid figures do not include military aid and aid from other US agencies: El Salvador: $280.4M Honduras: $680M Dominican Republic: $223.7M Mexico: $958.2M Guatemala: $391.8M

This report shows US aid $s for the past few years (see page 9 (US Assistance) and pages 25-30 show various other agencies providing aid (DOD, etc.) (needs more research)

We could also send the countries a bill for processing, housing, feeding and providing healthcare and daycare for each of the illegals citizens that they facilitate into the US.

Most Americans are fed-up---and want these types sent back from whence they came....but the buzz is Central American govts are refusing to take them back.
This is what Clinton did when the Cubans tried to come over.
1. Used the coast guard to escort them and point them back to Cuba
2. Went to Congress and they have him the power to empower the state governors, that in case of a mass migration they can "authorize every sheriff, every police department in AZ and TX, to utilize their state police, take custody of these individuals, give them short term assistance, and start loading up their national guard planes and fly them back home...
....none of this turning them loose crap...
....word will circulate within 24 hours...."there ain't no free lunch."
Shut off all state aid to the cities. Today. Shut their asses down.
Their special and diverse skills are in their knowledge of and in navigating the requirements to apply for and maintain entitlement assistance. Nothing else.
613 people? Seriously? Lets send millions of illegals up there and see how sympathetic those folks are!
That “youth and energy” is concentrated on Azatlan Reconquista and in completely embedding themselves in our entitlement system. That’s the ‘youth’, that’s the ‘energy’.
Yes, greener pastures out of state, Massachusetts is the big winner.
Back in the late 60’s Jacksonville Florida and a few other towns and cities in the south, gave free one way tickets, to blacks on welfare, to Boston.
Today we just give them, in their own language a comparison between Portland and Boston welfare payments and benefits. We also give them, in their own language quotes from Governor Lepage on welfare and illegals and Deval Laurdine Patrick, the obama look alike governor of Massachusetts.
Illegals = the new "gibs me dat fo free" group. Just where do the libs think the money comes from? 0bummer's stash? Some people need to realize the tax money comes out of the working peoples' pockets.
Arrest illegals. Seize their property. Deport them after some prison time.
How about this: Invoice all assistance payments to foreign nationals in residence in your state against the foreign aid sent to their country of origin? We should not be sending foreign aid to ANYONE unless it is in our best interest, but at least we can charge them for the costs of helping their people.
And to continue, the aid they are given should be contingent upon their leaving. A box lunch and a bus ticket sounds good!
The hell with spending money by putting them in prison. The feds are flying the invaders from TX to AZ now. Just fly the planes straight south and drop them back in their country.
Literally “drop”.
>>General Assistance is temporary, emergency aid intended to help individuals and families<<
Can anyone define the time limit for temporary and emergency . How long a timespan is considered temporary. How long does an emergency situation last?
Yup, and preferably without a parachute. Maybe give each a 75lb anvil to take home......
