WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Obama announced today that a deal had been struck with North Korea to trade the South Korean capital of Seoul to secure the safe return of the USS Pueblo, a U.S. Navy spy ship held captive since 1968.
Standing next to the ship’s christener, Mrs. Dorothy Duvall of Palm Beach, Florida, the president told reporters at the Rose Garden ceremony he decided to act when he learned of the ship’s “rapidly deteriorating condition.”
“Could we someday regret handing over the capital city of an important ally to its mortal enemy? Absolutely. Might this encourage more mischief by North Korea? Maybe. Was it worth it? You betcha,” the president said.
“Let me be clear. It has been an ironclad tradition of the Navy, going back to when the USS Chesapeake struck to HMS Leopard in spite of Commodore Barry’s order not to ‘give up the ship,’ that we make a promise to never leave a ship behind.”
The USS Indianapolis could not be reached for comment.
National Security Advisor Susan Rice promised a speedy reunion between the families and crew members, who she noted had “served with honor and distinction” during their many years in captivity.
When reporters told Rice that the crew had returned to the U.S. decades ago, Rice covered her ears and said, “I’m not listening! La la la la LA LA LA!” before loudly beginning to sing “Yankee Doodle.”
The Naval Shipyard in San Francisco is preparing to receive the Pueblo after more than 46 years in captivity. The ship is expected to undergo “reintegration” for several months, where its former sailors will allege it was a communist sympathizer as it gets a fresh coat of paint before decommissioning.
Questions to the Joint Chiefs went unanswered as they were busy gnawing on their chew toys.

I’ve always thought we should send the Pueblo to the bottom in the dignified manner of US fighting ship, without necessarily informing the Norks, or any sightseers who might happen to be aboard at the time, of our intention to do so.
The USS Forestall was sold for a penny and I think another Ship recently for scrap for a penny! What does this fool need a ship for a museum piece at his library? A Pebble in the Sand!

A couple of years ago the battleship Texas (on permanent display) developed a slow leak. A female diver went over the side and was feeling for the leak. (Mind you, this is in the armored part intended to resist incoming shells.) She inadvertently put her hand through the hull opening a fist-sized leak.
They are planning on backfilling around the hull so it will not be in the water anymore.
Maybe we could trade Fort Ticonderoga to the British for the return of Benedict Arnold.
I say we trade Liberals to the Taliban..since libs relate to the Taliban so much and support their cause, I say trade em..but I think eventually the Taliban will get sick of them and throw them back
Update: White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has tweeted that this is in error, that the USS Pueblo was returned in exchange for President Obama’s soul. He then added, “Ha! Joke’s on them!”
This was the worst trade since Rick Middleton for Ken Hodge.
That makes me sad. I didn’t know the Texas was in such bad shape.

I’d trade Obama, his cabinet, and Bergdahl for two North Korean television sets.
A former navy guy told me a story about a ship they took out of mothballs and spent millions on retrofitting. During an inspection when it was all done the inspector kicked a gun mount and the mount and half a huge bolt chipped off. He said, “We’re going to scrap it.” That was the end of the inspection and the ship.
Prior to that story I always imagined that a ship would still be structurally sound even a century after it was made. The Titanic is apparently just a pile of iron oxide.
I visited the Texas in 1964 as a ten-year-old. I was impressed. But when I went below deck I was shocked that you could see from one end to the other. A single hit would have been devastating. Also, it was 100 degrees outside and the engines were off course cool. It was a hundred degrees below decks. Can you imagine what it would be like at full steam? Damn!
India is still using an aircraft carrier built in 1945 by the British. Which sounds totally insane.
