Rubio: No 'responsible way' to smoke pot
The Hill ^ | May 19, 2014 | Mario Trujillo

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said asking whether a politician has ever tried marijuana is a "worthless question" in American politics.

Rubio, a potential 2016 candidate for president, has consistently dodged the question about if he experimented with the drug as a younger man. In an interview that aired Monday from ABC News-Yahoo News, Rubio reiterated that answering the question honestly is a lose-lose.

"Here is the problem with that question in American politics," he said. "If you say that you did, suddenly there are people out there saying it is not a big deal, look at all these successful people who did it. And I don't want my kids to smoke marijuana. And I don't want other people's kids to smoke marijuana. I don't think there is a responsible way to recreationally use marijuana. On the other side of it, if you tell people that you didn't, they won't believe you. So it is just a worthless question."

He added: "I understand it is a question today that people think they need to ask, but the bottom line is, I don't think people should smoke marijuana."

The Florida senator said he decided against answering the question after a conversation he had following the publication of his book, An American Son, in which he wrote about his mediocre grades in high school.

"Someone came up to me and said, ‘You know, I enjoyed your book, but I want you to know, my son came up to me and said he doesn't have to get good grades in high school, because look at Marco Rubio, he didn't do well in high school and look how successful he's been,’ ” he said.

Rubio, an opponent of legalization, made similar comments earlier this year.

The drug has been decriminalized in a number of states and legalized in Colorado and Washington. Rubio said federal law drug laws should be enforced there.

"And the bottom line is, I believe that adding yet another mind-altering substance to something that's legal is not good for the country," he said. "I understand there are people that have different views on it, but I feel strongly about that."

What a great response from Rubio and I’m not a Rubio fan.
I’m so glad I’m not a parent. The culture is encouraging drug use and children are seeing that.
Its admirable to see elected politicians stand firm on Conservative social issues when so many say have that abortion & smoke that joint.

I am miffed at Rubio, too, but I don’t think he’s phony on most things. He sounded idiotic trying to sell the immigration because he was way out his comfort zone selling what he knew was a crap sandwich. He was incoherent, rushed, and sounded horrible. On most conservative issues, he sounds comfortable and natural because he knows it in his heart.

I am far from over his immigration push, but I am not going to throw out the baby with the bathwater. He’s great on a lot of important issues.

RE :”I am far from over his immigration push, but I am not going to throw out the baby with the bathwater. He’s great on a lot of important issues.”

He strikes me as just another Chamber of Commerce lackey, much like Paul Ryan is. (”We need to crack down on...” so FOS)

He lied like hell about that Senate immigration bill, then realizing how it hurt him claimed its opposition is all about Obama enforcement, as if that bill would be OK otherwise.

No, its about you lying Rubio.

Rubio probably was never totally with us on sending home all invaders, but might be more reasonable than the total phonies. He was played by Schummer and McCain, which indicates they wanted to marginalize him ASAP.

I'm with you...I like that answer. I'm in a small minority here, but I trust Rubio more than the others who are classified as RINOs. Except for being caught up in the compromise on the invasion of the US, he's been a consistant conservative. I could vote for Rubio, but not Christie, JebBush, Paul Ryan or the other total backstabbers.

A local talk show host commented on the idea of "experimenting" with drugs. Unless you were wearing a lab coat and holding a clipboard while doing it, you weren't "experimenting" - you were just getting stoned.

The other day I heard Rubio give the Chamber of Commerce/Paul Ryan line about passing a bill now (originally 2011 w Ryan) that would cut some SS and medicare benefits in 10 years, through raising the age of eligibility for those currently over 55, starting 10 years from now.

Then he repeated the made up Paul Ryan claim that those entitlements wont be there (Like that is really what the Chamber is worried about) unless we pass a bill now that doesn't do anything about them for 10 years, then takes away a few years of it from some and eventually everyone. Typical gimmick.

And how would our NEW Americans previously illegal given amnesty by them react in a vote to that idea?

Well they don't give them the vote for 10 years. So in 10 years their retirement entitlements start year moves out in time at the same time they just first get the vote, so they cant vote against them now.

Typical Chamber of Commerce crap.

No matter how you come down on drugs, this position is indefensible. At least, for anyone who calls themself "conservative".

Wow I didn’t know Conservatives support big gov making decisions on things they don’t like. Good to see that small gov principles are nothing more than a lie and get tossed out as soon as it is inconvenient to your ideology. Sounds like typical fake conservative hypocrisy. This is why nobody respects you, Rubio.

News flash Rubio, I don’t like alcohol but you don’t see me calling for prohibition. That’s a real conservative stance. Whether you like something or not is not a litmus test for regulation. I don’t want my daughter to drink or to associate with date raping, abusive, boozers. As long as I teach her and act like a real parent, she will be equipped to handle any decision she wants to make. You treat society like children don’t complain when you spend the rest of your life changing diapers. I guess Rubio’s hands are small enough for kids gloves because they suit him and his ilk perfectly. Stupid peasants aren’t smart enough to make their own choices. Why smoke cannabis when that wonderful alcohol is there to keep you stupid, evil, and sick.

How about a grand compromise? Lets put alcohol on the schedule list of dangerous addictive and lethal drugs and take cannabis off of it. Anyone who disagrees, I’ll challenge you to a contest. I’ll smoke an ounce of the highest grade cannabis vs you taking everclear shots. Then, if you are alive, we can discuss why alcohol is not on the list of dangerous substances.

There is no responsible way to grant amnesty either. We tried it once and look where it got us.
