SAY IT AIN’T SO HANK!

Have you Heard! Another true American Hero has tarnished his unblemished reputation as a superb Athlete, as an Achiever, and as a Role Model for millions of Americans; someone whose dream was big enough to overcome an apparent lack of opportunity. That man is our Hero, Hank Aaron, and the sad incident in question involves the unfortunate remarks taken from his speech given at an Official Anniversary Celebration of his remarkable achievements.

On one hand, Hall of Famer Aaron’s political statements regarding blacks in America reveal his pain and perspective. But to what purpose? Have his comments advanced the dream and future that Martin Luther King preached about? Sadly I do not think that was achieved.

His comments are unfortunate in as much as they take blacks...

This shows me that some will never be satisfied with the racial climate in this country no matter what or how much is conceded to them. It will always be gimme more, you owe me...............always.

This is but another example that you do not have to have and intelligence quota above 50 to hit a little white ball with a stick.

Oh, and I know how those car dealerships go with famous athletes names work also. A name only association with trusted overseers there to run the joint. Even then it does not always work out.

Aaron was a boyhood athletic idol of mine. I kept his game by game stats some years. But what he said is probably what a very large pct. of black Americans believe. Which means the challenge of bring them into the American mainstream might be hopeless. There is absolutely no stated or printed Republican policy that does not include black Americans with all other Americans. Which means Republicans believe in giving all Americans opportunities with no special favors for any particular group.

Obviously, many blacks do not want to be treated like all other Americans. They want to be regarded as victims and given special i.e. unconstitutional treatment. The current situation can't go on forever. Black Americans have to decide whether they want to be like other Americans or permanently placed on a separate level always a ward of the state and permanently regarded and incapable of adapting to American society.

As a little white kid back in the 60s, I idolized Hank Aaron, and his recent comments felt like a punch in the stomach. I still have an old issue of “Sport” magazine with Hank on the cover.

I searched the Atlanta newspaper a few days ago looking for a local comment on Hank’s statement. I couldn’t find “HANK” or “AARON” in the search. Can any local ATL Freepers update us with the local response to Hank’s statement?

I always thought Aaron was a class act. I guess he decided to come out of the closet.

What is racism ? It is a denial of obtaining equal protection of the freedom of opportuity to obtain all its goods and services from a society offered to the rest of its members because of race.

Racism is not a disagreement of policy with a person because of their race. To claim that as racism when the equal opportunities exist the accuser should be required to prove their charge.

PROVE IT HANK !

Times change; faulty brains don’t. Aaron is yet another example of the wisdom of not granting role model status to an athletic moron just because he can hit a ball. He matters only within the context of his actions in the small community of baseball. Outside that, he’s just another clown.

I recently finished a bio of Robinson. He was a Republican and a big fan of Nixon, but he was highly critical of Goldwater and made a number of verbal attacks against him during Goldwater's campaign for president. He called Goldwater a bigot because of his, Goldwater's, opposition to the 1964 CRs bill. It was only after Goldwater was defeated that Robinson met with him and discovered he wasn't the vicious bigot Robinson had made him out to be.

I doubt Goldwater could have been elected even with the majority of the black vote, but it certainly hurt Pubbies down the road. My own feeling is that Goldwater was right to oppose many of the measures of the bill. He recanted his opposition years later, but he wasn't far wrong about the ill effects of the bill. Equal rights for everyone if good...special "rights" for certain groups is not.

Yes, the Democrats were ruthless in using JFK’s death to their advantage...it’s hard to imagine any Republican winning in 64. More’s the pity.
