Who thought this was going to be about science and not politics? I don’t think they are capable of that any longer

I found Tyson's treatment to be offensive, condescending, and smarmy.

Those three words describe Tyson to a "T".

I didn't bother with Ep. 2 and won't see any of the others. A waste of time, really.

That's because it's all they've got if you don't share their assumptions.

Tried to watch EP.01, drifted off to sleep. Heard some rumblings about this episode deriding others for not thinking the way the series does. Guess I’ll be skipping the rest of this already washed up series. (IMO as well, Through the Wormhole’s choo-choo has gone around the bend; un-watchable.)

:: It was entitled, “Some of the Things That Molecules Do.” ::

Interesting, by the title.

As a chemist (away from the rarefied air of therotical physics for some time), I must ask, can molecules “evolve”? I know they can decay and, even subsequently return to their natural state but, can Lead (Pb) become Gold (Au)?

Probably won't be watching anymore, noticed he threw in a little plug in for global warming to boot.

Really thought the series would be cutting edge discoveries and new speculations, it dang sure isn't that.
Just a rehash of older stuff, Sagan did it better.

I’m totally fine with the condescension over Evolution.

At least he is using actual facts to make his case. Dog breeding is an excellent example of the power of genetic selection to “evolve” a species.

My beef is the condescension over CO2 caused “catastophic” global warming that is gut churning.

There are no actual facts to support this, only 30 years of hyped BS and fudged numbers. ANY questions and you are labled an unscientific DENIER!.

It’s just short of labeling someone a “Witch” if they don’t think CO2 will cause the world to end in the next 100 years.

I think there is room for both...

I think that evolution creeps along over time. I just think there was some intelligent design in creating humans.

I thought this was supposed to be a science show, not a political show.

Let me tell you something now so you can avoid heartbreak and confusion in the future:

ALL TV IS POLITICIZED NOW. All of it - from sitcoms to the evening news. It is ALL propaganda. Movies too. The gatekeepers in Hollywood won't allow any dissenting thoughts.

Tyson is the “Obama” of science. That is to say he is a mediocre astronomer/scientist with no real discoveries to his credit, but because of his decent speaking ability and polished TV persona (not to mention shameless self-promotion),he has been turned into a “science superstar” by a liberal media desiourous of having a minority Carl Sagan.

Pretty clear with the “Wild wolf to domestic dog” meme, they sought to conflate adaptation WITHIN a species, with Evolution from one species to another.

This looks almost like it’s sidling up on some kind of philosophy of distributed consciousness and purpose without actually saying so — a cosmos-is-God worldview.

People who have studied live species know they are much more likely to respond to environmental pressure by approaching extinction than by evolving. Live observations of evolution of a new species are few if any. The best we can see is the way that microbes acquire new characteristics to weather man’s attempts to battle them with antibiotics, and yet we don’t see a staph germ turning into something that isn’t a staph germ.

All this is well known. Ultimately these people are busy dodging God. Classic preachers would warn them of hell, but it becomes obvious that they are crafting their own hells on earth even before leaving it. Because with ignoring God comes the rejection of the benefits of the personal favor of God, the benefits of truth, reason, love, longsuffering, hope, patience, etc.

I watched the first twenty minutes of the first episode. I could not finish, I was getting ill. Offensive, condescending, and smarmy would have been a huge improvement. It was stoopid, confusing, unfocused, hokey, superficial, transcendently glib, juvenilely simplistic, inane and disappointing. I WAITED FORTY YEARS FOR THIS POS!!!!! We have learned SO MUCH MORE about the Cosmos in the last forty years, communications technology and media have advanced so far, and all we get is this stale dog vomit.

A total, complete and utter failure, a disgrace.

Without going through anyone’s complex, arcane labyrinth or wormhole or imaginary alternate universe, I think it best to start with one of the only two bottom lines that can possibly exist concerning the origins of life:
1) there is a supreme intelligence and power, probably eternal, which deliberately made things and balanced them in a systematic way; or
2) rocks, legendarily dumb, probably eternal, can turn into people, all by themselves, given that enough non-caring, ignorant energy is applied to them over unimaginably long periods of time.
Which one sounds more like a fairy tale?

"Some of the Things That Molecules Do."

Sometime they get together and produce tv shows that are offensive, condescending, and smarmy to other concatenations of molecules?

I read about the series in Sky and Telescope. There are one-paragraph summaries of each episode, and one of the upcoming ones is about global warming.

Then, in the opening episode (which I did watch) they were smugly patting themselves about using the scientific method, basing conclusions on objective data, and always questioning everything.

In the episode itself they spent ten minutes on the poor plight of someone who dared to question the dogma of the church - even though they admitted in the episode that he had no proof for his theory. In essence, it was his (Bruni's) opinion against others. And it also showed Bruni (in animation) turning away from the cross while they said that Bruni was always a man of Christian faith - he just believed that God had created a bigger universe than the 'consensus' of the day. So even beyond their biased selection of a non-scientific (meaning, no real data on either side) focus for a major portion of the episode just so they could take a shot at the church, they lied in what the protagonist believed.

So, smugly claiming to use the scientific method when they do not, selecting for a major focus in the first episode a non-scientific argument in which they falsely showed the 'good guy' turning away from the cross in disgust, and an upcoming episode that is promised to be propaganda on the sacred dogma of global warming.

So, I watched the first one but I won't be watching the others.
