Lois Lerner fears for her life if she testifies openly before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Wednesday, according to her attorney.
House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa announced Sunday that Lerner will testify at Wednesdays hearing, but Lerners attorney Bill Taylor said that Lerner will seek to continue invoking her Fifth Amendment rights and will also seek a one-week delay of her testimony.
Oversight members are reportedly open to granting Lerner a one-week delay if she petitions for one in person at Wednesdays hearing. The delay would allow Lerners lawyers to continue negotiating for immunity, which they have been doing since at least September.
I advised the staff that calling Ms. Lerner knowing that she will assert her rights was not only improper but dangerous. Ms. Lerner has been the subject of numerous threats on her life and safety, and on the life and safety of her family. I left with the staff recent evidence of those threats, said Taylor in a letter to Issa.
But Oversight previously determined that Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights when she made a statement attesting to her innocence at a May 2013 hearing. Republican Reps. Jim Jordan and Jason Chaffetz, both Oversight members, said recently that they were considering holding Lerner in contempt of Congress if she does not testify.
Issa said on the subject, We want her to come back and answer questions. Well see on contempt.
That’s probably her point— that Justice will not investigate.
But, seriously, you’re right that her lawyer would probably have to provide some shreds of evidence to validate death threats as a reason for delay. Is she going to be any safer in a week? Is he requesting round the clock armed guards? An armored car?
Actually what she did was revoker her right to the 5th because she had already invoked that right before answering that question. At least that was what they said at the time.
She’s afraid of Arkancide.
Hey, she knew the job was dangerous when she took it.
I think they are trying to imbed the meme in the media that it is TEA Party members making the death threats.
It’s not those on the Right she has to fear.
Thus the try for the deal of immunity. Do not need immunity if you are invoking the 5th or even can.
She may be getting threats from extreme left as well as extreme righties. Obama crowd wants her quiet and some “heart in the right place, but stupid” patriots may also be spouting off when what we need to do is to offer the lady some support from “our side” so that she’ll get the truth out.
if she were alive
Why,she didn’t do anything wrong,I just don’t get it,why are not all these contradictions reported on and discussed, this woman is a walking train wreck,it was just rogue employees in Cincinnati, then it was people in Washington, she didn’t do anything wrong, fifth ammendment, now her life is threatened, what a freakin basket case.
If this was a Republican we would have hundreds of reporters trying to become woodwards and bernsteins try to get the top guy who is the one responsible for ALL OF THIS!
IT,all emmanated from the Citizen United decision, that’s when Obumbo sicked the IRS on the tea parties.
She must have direct, damning and supportable testimony of 0bama’s involvement.
Suck it up Lois.
Just another arrogant a-hole who screw people, lie about it then while when they get between a rock and a hard place and want the same people they screwed to feel sorry for them.
You do the crime you do the time. Stop whining you a-hole you made the choice now it’s time to pay the price.
This pretended fear is just a ploy to get her immunity. But she does not get immunity against perjury.
Her fear is not grounds for giving her immunity.
I am afraid for the country, and nobody gives me a tax break, or immunity from testimony.
