Los Angeles, Calif., Feb 21, 2014 / 12:58 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- L.A. Archbishop José H. Gomez has called for interim measures such as a moratorium on immigration raids and help for undocumented minors in order to bypass immigration reforms apparent political dead end.
These two proposals are no substitute for true immigration reform but they would make a big difference in the lives of millions of our neighbors, Archbishop Gomez said in his Nov. 21 column for the Los Angeles archdioceses newspaper The Tidings.
He voiced disappointment in the House of Representatives recent decision not to move forward with immigration reform proposals at the current time.
Saying the interim measures would help ease suffering, the archbishop called on Congress to approve a moratorium on deportations and immigration raids and arrests, except for violent criminals.
Since 2008, our government has deported nearly two million people and nearly a half million more are locked up in immigration detention centers, he said, emphasizing that these are real people.
One in every four persons who is being arrested or deported is being ripped out of their homes taken away from their children, their wives and husbands, all their relatives, the archbishop said.
He added that two-thirds of the 11 million undocumented immigrants have been living in the U.S. for at least a decade.
The vast majority pose no criminal danger to our community. Just the opposite, he said. They are going to church and working alongside us, paying taxes, making our country and our communities stronger.
Archbishop Gomez said the U.S. should also help the dreamers, children born in a foreign country but brought to the U.S. by their immigrant parents when they were young. Their name comes from the proposed federal DREAM Act, which would regularize their status.

Gomez,They are going to church and working alongside us, paying taxes, making our country and our communities stronger.... But spend thousands entrusting their kids lives to mexican drug cartels...making our country and our communities stronger...uh huh,Gomez see's no problem here..
Remember the great sigh of relief when Gomez was chosen to relieve Mahoney? Seems a bit premature now.
Who cares if how it effects the rest of us, as long as it benefits the archdiocese financial situation.
I don’t know which is going to be worse. Amnesty to the 30 to 50 million illegals already here or “immigration reform” which is going to open our borders to the poverty, crime and disease from all over the planet.
Dear Archbishop,
Kindly go and ____ yourself.
Thank you.
Protesters Question Clergyman’s Loyalty
At Archbishop Jose Gomez Residence
Dozens of protesters have shown up at Archbishop of Los Angelus Jose Gomez residence many carrying American flags and bearing signs questioning his loyalty to the US not Mexico along with many signs demanding equal rights for American citizens in Mexico.
The protest was apparently triggered by the clerics decision to push forward with his predecessors decision the disgraced Cardinal Mahoney with offering amnesty thus citizenship to Mexicans crossing the border illegally while thousands of Americans in Mexico suffer under 2nd class citizenship unable to own property and suffer indignitys let alone participate in Mexican elections while living there in Mexico.
A spokeswoman for the group, Harriet Hildegarden insisted her group consists of Catholics loyal to the church. “We will be protesting at other locations where prominent clergy of the church have sided with the Obama regime”Hildy” claims the church is supporting the democrat party which denied God at their convention and declared what she claims is war on the Catholics but would collude with i t on many issues including “amnesty” .
When asked if she may be denied communion for her activities her reply was “Well it’s been known that when that happens quicker when clerics get personally attacked than when some politican challanges the church on the grounds of faith and morals” . You didn’t hear much from them (the bishops) about the Gosnell baby murderer trial. Now that it’s winding up perhaps the bishops might call a “conference” next year but they sure acted swiftly when it comes to allowing this country resigning its sovereign rights new parishioners.

...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.[Posted on 03/19/2013 7:04:07 AM PDT by Perdogg]
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...[Posted on 04/21/2013 1:52:42 PM PDT by SoConPubbie]
Fallacy. I ask one more time: as a natural born citizen and resident, what do I get out of this deal?
Immigrants vote 70% for pro-abortion politicians.
Thus, in pushing for more immigrants, Archbishop Gomez is a pro-abortion activist.
“Immigrants vote 70% for pro-abortion politicians.
Thus, in pushing for more immigrants, Archbishop Gomez is a pro-abortion activist.” BINGO!!!!!
Since pro-abortion politicians are the ones persecuting the Church, Archbishop Gomez is campaigning for persecution of the Church.
