Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" was the feminist's anthem. "But I'm still an embryo "

Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" was released in 1972. The year before the Roe vs. Wade decision.

The song was played at the National Organization for Women's national convention in 1973. "I Am Woman" has been the organization's anthem for almost 50 years.

Others may have noted before but I never knew one of the lines in the song was, "But I'm still an embryo With a long, long way to go." I guess they didn't view embryos as lifeless tissue at the time?

At one time the feminist movement was about women being treated with respect and equality in the workplace. I 100% support that. Somewhere along the way, abortionists must have hijacked the movement.

At about the 2:10 mark in the video ..... "But I'm still an embryo With a long, long way to go."

That line should be played over and over at Wendy Davis' campaign events. She is a one issue candidate -- ABORTION.

Anyway, I just found it a bit odd that the abortion loving feminist's theme song for the last 50 years didn't consider embryos to be lifeless.

Somebody next door to that women’s convention should counter that song with one by Paul Anka, came out about the same time; “You’re Having My Baby! (What a lovely way to say how much you love me.)”. Some people HATED that song, hated it. and not just because it was sweet and romantic.

I was very surprised to find the reference to embryo when so much of their argument in support of abortions is that it is lifeless tissue. “I Am Woman” is the anthem. I just find it so contradictory.

Reddy sang that song “I Am Woman” in 1975 at the NY State Fair.

I believe that the use of "embryo" in the song is figurative, not literal, i.e. it is to be heard as:
"I am unfinished, still in the process of becoming what I will be."
not
"I am a fetus."
and most certainly not "I am an unborn baby".

I'm quite sure the feminists would have abandoned the song long ago if "embryo" was meant literally.

"Havin' My Baby" hints at abortion, too.

Didn't have to keep it Wouldn't put you through it You could have swept it from you life But you wouldn't do it, no, you wouldn't do it.

I didn’t take it that Helen thought she was a fetus. Figuratively or literally, the word has meaning. Needless to say but if the song was being written today, that word would be left out.

...I get your point, but I wish you hadn’t brought that song up...now I’ll be internally hearing it for the rest of the day...ugh...
