Vanity: Need advice for best state
05 Jan 2014 | self

Due to health considerations, I have been unable to travel for some time. However, doctors have now given tentative approval for limited travel for a few days. This may be the last chance I have to do so before declining health no longer allows that, so I am thinking of visiting with BIL's family in Vermont, with perhaps one or two short stops to visit other family members on the way back. I am looking for recommendations for the following needs:

1. A State where the Driver's Licence requirements are not unduly onerous since I have only a limited time and can not travel very far. By the time I travel in the spring (April or thereabouts) the licence I had in the past will have expired. California has tightened up its requirements (unless you are an Illegal, apparantly) and is now demanding a Birth Certificate and one more form of ID such as a valid SSN and proof of residence. My BC was recorded on paper records which no longer exist, so now Cali wants a Passport at least. Which brings up more problems such as around 400 dollars US for the fees and a several months long wait for processing. A State which will accept the old DL info by checking the Licence database for Cali (which the LEOs all use routinely when they run a check) with minimal processing time would be ideal.

2. A State where the firearms purchasing requirements are also fairly easy (see above limitations) and registration is not ridiculous. I am beyond tired of attempting to purchase a firearm and having dealers flat out refuse when they find out I am from California. Plus, the new laws demanding the registration of all long-arms including all rifles and shotguns are outrageous, on top of which the mandatory ten-day 'wait' period before you can pick up your purchase is asinine.

3. Longer term; which State has the least Property Taxes should I find it necessary to permanently relocate? The southern and border states are out, unfortunately, since this medical condition is sensitive to high temps with the accompanying high humidity. Power goes out and the AC is off for long, I will wind up in the ER again which is never a fun prospect.

A state which has not been mentioned yet, but which might fill the requirements is Oregon. t is not far from your current location.

You will be qualified to get a DL the moment that you enter the state intending to permanently stay. Essentially, by the time you get an address, you are a resident. The written test is harder than you may thing. Mostly just good old common-sense questions, but enough state-specific ones to fail if you do not read the manual. For instance: speed limint in a school zone, how many feet behind a school bus must you stop, speed limit in commercial district, etc.

Concealed carry, you must take a course pass a simple test and apply at the local sheriff. Shall issue, so no problems if your record is good.

The one problem is that Oregon recognizes no other state’s license and most states in turn don’t recognize Oregons. So the best solution is a non-resident Utah license. A few weeks at most, but a different course and test than the Oregon one.

From Eugene up to Portland you are in the land of nutty progressives, but Southern Oregon is very conservative except for Ashland.

I saw Ms Atkins in the mid 90’s. She died in 2009 up at CCWF.

I did not even know she died at Chowchilla. I thought she was going to be at CIW for the duration. Oh well, we all go sometime.

An excellent suggestion, and a State where I had once thought of relocating to if necessary. However, note that I mentioned before about licensed Firearms Dealers refusing to sell to California residents. I have had friends mention that there is indeed a difficulty with that to this day.

Also too, note that I will have only a limited amount of time to travel. In that small time period I will not only need to establish a 'residence' if possible since I am currently unwilling to undergo the ridiculous requirements California is currently demanding (not to mention its current apparent slide to a "sanctuary state" as well as mandatory firearms registrations) and therefore looking to obtain a different State's DL if possible, I do not think merely staying in the State for a few days will satisfy all the requirements necessary to obtain the necessary documentation.

Along with the firearms requirements, I will probably only have this small opportunity to determine which state will be the one I relocate to should the need arise. Once relocated, there I will have to stay, so I need to make a quite informed decision with but little time to act.

Sounds like you might need better healthy care than the ILLEGAL ALIEN IN CHIEF has in mind for you.
You might consider moving to Germany.

My dad was born by a "country mid wife" in a small home more than 10 miles away from a hospital in the early 30s.
But his birth was documented and recorded at the local County Court House Hall of Records..

When in college I attended a lecture by Vince Bugliosi, this was 1980.

He said that Charlie was the one guy who he came across who was truly frightening and did not deserve to see the light of day.

There is no doubt he is a dangerous person, and I am sure he will never know a moment of freedom.

I lived in NH. The property taxes equaled what I would have paid in income tax and sales tax.

_____________

Wow. I have a daughter who is planning to settle in NH. She also wants to purchase income property. I suggested that she purchase her income property in either VT or ME to avoid the high property tax, although I am not sure whether those states will levy an income tax on rents receive in those states.

It is probably worth a try then. There’s a fairly heavy concentration of military people in SW Pennsylvania, so most of the Penndot people working behind the counter will at least be respectful.

We’re trying to change that. It’s hard because of all the dregs from California and Mexico.

A few observations:

1. Based on what you have written, I really don’t see any compelling or strong reason for you to move out-of-state at all. A job offer, or to join family, etc., are good reasons and it is important to have them. Without a strong reason, the chance is great you will regret the move when you eventually and inevitably discover the things in your new state that don’t measure up to your expectations or to what you had before, since no place is perfect.

The older we get, the less our ability or willingness to adjust. There is absolutely no reason to rush and make a decision that is difficult to reverse and based largely on other people’s opinions. One man’s treasure is often another’s trash. Moreover, a long-distance move and settling in a new place is a very stressful, challenging, and protracted event even for someone in perfect health.

With your health concerns, I would think weather should take precedence over firearms, and I doubt you will be able to find better weather than what you have now in northern CA. Oregon near Eugene and Portland is very humid in winter since it rains most days during winter.

2. It seems your thought of relocating was prompted by frustrations with the driver’s license. Everyone needs a DL, if only to drive to the store to buy groceries. Here is something simple but definitely worth trying. Call the local office of your state representative and tell them you need their help because you’re having problem renewing your license with the DMV. Explain what documents you do have, why it is impractical to get a passport, etc. It is entirely possible an aide would call the DMV right away on your behalf and presumably reach someone high up who could resolve the case immediately. If not, keep up the effort to keep them on the case until resolved.

3. You wrote, “This may be the last chance I have to do so before declining health no longer allows that”

I have read that the control that our minds have over our bodies is much greater than we realize. Most of us do not put that control to good use, but rather, program ourselves in negative ways, such as when we say things like, “I catch colds every winter”, or “My knees have always been weak”. Sure enough, our bodies give us exactly those things.

And so we are admonished to stop reinforcing the negative like you did with your statement above; and instead, do this: “Every day when you get up, don’t let one negative thought come in. Negative thoughts will undoubtedly try to break through, but each time they do, immediately banish them.”

BAD idea. Very expensive, very cold; terrible people; mainly Massh*les and New Yorkers. Highly regulated. We have been trying to get out for some time.

Some of the same history, I see. My mum is not exactly certain when she was finally able to be driven into the nearest town for all the paperwork necessary after I was born, but County Clerk seems the most likely possibility for records, but again: those old records no longer exist.

Well, I suppose I'd be gobstruck if there weren't at least one dobie piping up. My great uncle always said that in any given body of blokes, at least one arse'ole was bound to cause a stink and more and more as the numbers grew. How right he was.

Listen, Nancyboy: since you don't read too well I'll just repeat quickly; with the meds I am taking and the stable point I have managed to reach on them to date, the doctors have given a tentative approval for minimal travel as long as I minimize any stresses involved. Your uninformed opinion is noted and marked as benefits yet another pelosibot who can not read past the talking points she needs to make her statement.

Take a hint.

I also made no mention of needing to 'drive' to various places in any part of the original post. Merely summarized that with all the difficulties now faced with I might as well apply for a DL in another state since I had to undergo the application to begin with. I might also one day have a slip of a prosthetic leg and accidentally stomp on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake, so obviously the danger I pose is astoundingly frightful! Or the corrective lenses might be damaged by a stray pellet and I might lose control of whatever vehicle I happen to be in control of! The horrors! Or even... (wait for it...) someday have a seizure and squeeze the trigger and begin spraying rounds in uncontrollable directions someday!

Now turning off "Sarcasm Mode" since I do not believe you are sufficiently above the single-IQ level enough to recognize genuine sarcasm when you encounter it. Crikey, what am I thinking? You probably never even read this far. Just skimmed enough to go running to bro Sharpton and egg him on to another 'racist cracker' rant.

To continue, since I doubt you truly posess enough of an attention span to get past the talking points thus far: since I was looking to move to another State to begin with and more so considering the "Gestapo" (unless you are an Illegal, apparently) Mentality that I am increasingly coming across in this State, I asked for FReeper help since they have always been good sources for information on many topics.

Rest assured you absolutely do not fall into that "Helpful FReeper" category in the slightest, and mind the door on your way out since if I have any say in the matter you might find it aiming for your protuberance much harder than you might have expected.

And no, Granny Pelosi, I am not going to tell you anything. You have already proven a distinct lack of literacy and comprehension which makes it a distinct possibility that you are either in the teaching profession or at the very least a tenured instructor in a very liberal establishment, so you may keep on wondering and trying to remember to breathe now and again if possible.

Thankfully, the twitfilter app works quite well in this browser, so... gone!
