Mormon Church Renounces Belief That Dark Skin Is Sign Of God's Disfavor
OpposingViews.com ^ | Dec. 14, 2013 | Kathryn Schroeder

The Mormon Church has officially renounced the belief that dark skin is a sign of disfavor, or curse.

On the official website for The Mormon Church, www.lds.org, a statement has been posted titled "Race and the Priesthood," where blame for the belief that dark skinned people were inferior to whites is placed on the establishment of the church coming in 1830, a time of great racism in the United States.

The Church points out how previous leaders, most notably President Brigham Young, restricted Blacks from priesthood in the Church, receiving the temple endowment, or allowing them to be married in the temple. Theories to explain why the restrictions existed have been developed over time, but according to "Race and the Priesthood," "None of these explanations is accepted today as the official doctrine of the Church."

AlterNet points out that the biblical text, The Book of Mormon, teaches that "dark skin is a sign of God’s curse, while white skin is a sign of his blessing." With 15,000,000 members worldwide, the teachings of such racism and segregation from inception into the Church strikes a sour chord with modern belief systems of equality amongst all people. It has been a struggle to overcome this part of their heritage for the Mormon Church, according to AlterNet.

The Mormon Church acknowledges in "Race and the Priesthood" the origin stories of said belief in their scripture, but concludes that the Church today "disavows the theories advanced in the past that black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse, or that it reflects actions in a premortal life; that mixed-race marriages are a sin; or that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else. Church leaders today unequivocally condemn all racism, past and present, in any form."

The decision to abandon the beliefs of inferiority for those with dark skin to white is a large step forward for The Mormon Church, and as Margaret Blair Young, an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University who has focused her documentary work on profiling the untold stories of Black Mormons, told The Guardian it is "a miracle."

Standard LDS responses to data put to them:

 1. How you interpret it is wrong...
 2. You are too ignorant to really understand it because you are not a member....
 3. You're not qualified to judge because you're no LONGER a member...
 4. You are just a bigot for bringing the whole ugly truth to light ...
 5. So’s yer Mama!
 6. Laugh it all off and post some silly image.
 7. Jump down the rabbit hole; Alice!
 8. Bait & Switch
 9. The OTHER 'half' of the truth is what we are avoiding.
10. "I Know It When I See It"
11. Hand waving...
12. YOU play defense for a while.
13. HEE Hee hee... let's get the Calvinists and the Armenians fighting!
14. GREAT FUN! Let's get the Catholics and the Protestants fighting!
15. Huh? Did you say something?
16. If I repeat this enough times some folks will be fooled into thinking it's true.
17. Playing dumb.
18. Refusing to answer because your ATTITUDE offends them.
19. (Let's see if they'll fall for the 'Defend a freak' ploy.)
20. And the MOST used... IGNORE what they posted and answer the question that SHOULD have been asked.

Office of First President & Living Prophet®:

April 1st, 2012

URGENT!

Fellow MORMON Freeper Christians!!

Due to the charges being leveled at our pesky opponents of "Out Of Context" comments;
we have been challenged repeatedly to then post the TRUTH IN context!
How dumb do they think we ARE??

We do not have to spend time refuting the facts against MORMONism;
we get LOTS more mileage out of claiming the Christians are in error,
then backing away and watch them sputter.

So, bottom line, stay aWAY from defending our faith, as it is a vain effort.

So, do what you can to stick to CONSERVATISM
(you can even rag on Mitt, if you want - it makes your message seem more authentic that way.)

As always, Tommy M.

Imagine a society of Latter Day-saints, a perfect cloister of exemplary individuals.

Crimes or deviance, properly so-called, will there be unknown; but faults, which appear venial to the Gentile,

will there create the same scandal that the ordinary offense does in ordinary consciousnesses.

If then, this society has the power to judge and punish, it will define these acts as criminal (or deviant) and will treat them as such.

Thing in life are not always what they seem sometime we have to stop being an reactionary

Slow down and let the Holy Spirit edify not the natural man.

Feeling the sweet spirit of the Lord is not weakness nor sentimentalism there is strength beyond our selves if we but listen and let the Lord Spirit of the Lord edify and instruct which is beyond any of our earthly man ability or understanding and vision.

In general what has happen on earth, just about all of our history on earth has been framed and derived it is as we had blinders on for the rest of the spectrum was not always presented so we could make a full evaluations.

This has all been allowed to happen because we are using the wrong method our power comes from heaven which few have called upon it or used it properly.

Ponder now what has been allowed to take place in the earth through our ignorance for many of us did not understand or aware of the tools the Lord has given us, and many were too busy, distracted, but man no more can afford, take the blinders off....

one example that has gone on in the earth recently was the debated between Louis Pasteur Vs Antoine Béchamp this was only a short while ago, but the designs of men were always able to hoodwink us and they always go down the road where there is the most, to get gain.

Mormon Doctrine on Blacks, Race and Priesthood Restriction Explained
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BATew0wqRs

Even if you want to dismiss this, I know the period that man is living through now is the restoration of all things, and that will be for all of us, the truth of every nook and cranny will come out will surface, for each and everyone no longer will one be able to hide their OWN SHORT COMMINGS, there will be no place to hide.

The opposition now has just about all its earthly tools in place, for various degrees and depth of surveillance.

Our Heavenly Father does not need those tools, for he is the True God of this heavens.

All the things that have been kept back will be made known there will be no place to hid.

A time is coming very soon a sobering moment will happen to all, even those who played snarky game on their fellowman will no longer be able to malign or molest.

Many have search the LDS scriptures not for truth, but to condemn the saints, meaning they knew enough in their hearts and minds and continue to ignore, will be accountable before the Lord for what they have done with that knowledge, if they do not repent.

I can not read the hearts and minds of men that belongs to the Lord.

Mosiah 2

33 For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and dieth in his sins, the same drinketh damnation to his own soul; for he receiveth for his wages an everlasting punishment, having transgressed the law of God contrary to his own knowledge.

34 I say unto you, that there are not any among you, except it be your little children that have not been taught concerning these things, but what knoweth that ye are eternally indebted to your heavenly Father, to render to him all that you have and are; and also have been taught concerning the records which contain the prophecies which have been spoken by the holy prophets, even down to the time our father, Lehi, left Jerusalem;

35 And also, all that has been spoken by our fathers until now. And behold, also, they spake that which was commanded them of the Lord; therefore, they are just and true.

36 And now, I say unto you, my brethren, that after ye have known and have been taught all these things, if ye should transgress and go contrary to that which has been spoken, that ye do withdraw yourselves from the Spirit of the Lord, that it may have no place in you to guide you in wisdom’s paths that ye may be blessed, prospered, and preserved—

37 I say unto you, that the man that doeth this, the same cometh out in open rebellion against God; therefore he listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness; therefore, the Lord has no place in him, for he dwelleth not in unholy temples.

38 Therefore if that man repenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever.

39 And now I say unto you, that mercy hath no claim on that man; therefore his final doom is to endure a never-ending torment.

40 O, all ye old men, and also ye young men, and you little children who can understand my words, for I have spoken plainly unto you that ye might understand, I pray that ye should awake to a remembrance of the awful situation of those that have fallen into transgression.

41 And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.

Nice parsing - of THIS heavens. LDS teachings include that there is a god over heavenly father, and one over him as well ad nausium. Mormon polytheism parsed at its best.

restornu:

That youtube link you posted, and the lds.org website posting on blacks and the priesthood as LDS doctrine completely ignore the August 17, 1949 statement of LDS President George Albert Smith, signed by all three members of the LDS First Presidency. That statement makes it clear that the priesthood ban was doctrine. The statement read:

The attitude of the Church with reference to Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time. The prophets of the Lord have made several statements as to the operation of the principle. President Brigham Young said: "Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a skin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy priesthood, and the law of God. They will go down to death. And when all the rest of the children have received their blessings in the holy priesthood, then that curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will then come up and possess the priesthood, and receive all the blessings which we now are entitled to."

President Wilford Woodruff made the following statement: "The day will come when all that race will be redeemed and possess all the blessings which we now have."

The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the Church is kept in mind, namely, that the conduct of spirits in the premortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality and that while the details of this principle have not been made known, the mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintain their first estate; and that the worth of the privilege is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the priesthood by the Negroes.

I trust the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints more than I trust some guy on youtube.

I failed to mention, restornu, that I fully support your right to your religious beliefs and do not wish to argue theology to you. You, as all other FReepers have the right to your religious beliefs.

My concern is that history is stated correctly, as far as I understand it, and is not deleted or placed in a black hole when it becomes inconvenient. If you have followed my posting history, you will know that I have attempted to correct the so-called Flying Inmans and others when I believed they incorrectly stated LDS or Mormon history.

I think you mean you believe that the 3 members of the first presidency of the COJCOLDS DID indeed say that “denying blacks the priesthood was LDS doctrine”...

and not that you “trust” them...

Ah...

Book of MORMON postings.

I just LOVE them!

The Book of Ether (Chapter 15)

30 And it came to pass that when Coriantumr had leaned upon his sword, that he rested a little, he smote off the head of Shiz.
31 And it came to pass that after he had smitten off the head of Shiz, that Shiz raised up on his hands and fell; and after that he had struggled for breath, he died.

Well! So would I!!!
