A quintessentially American lunch item is the peanut butter & jelly sandwich. Yet, one principal has a unique perspective on this lunch staple.
Did you know that eating or even talking about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be considered racist?
Thats right.
Apparently, its because people in some cultures dont eat sandwich bread. Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School in Portland explained in an interview with the Portland Tribune:
Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year, the Tribune said.
What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches? Gutierrez asked. Another way would be to say: Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that? Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.
The Tribune noted that the school started the new year with intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, to help educators understand their own white privilege, in order to change their teaching practices to boost minority students performance.Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation to examine a news article and discuss the white privilege it conveys, the Tribune added.
Gutierrez completed a week-long seminar called Coaching for Educational Equity, a program the Tribune says focuses on race and how it affects life. She also serves on an administrative committee that focuses on systematic racism.
Our focus school and our Superintendents mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another, she said in a letter to staff.
Now that youve been made aware of the evil of PB&J, theres only one question left to answer: Is white bread more racist than whole wheat?

You keep fighting and fighting and fighting.
At some point, things give.
Holy, Mother of God....its a sanswich people...and this is America...and we eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and feed them to our kids. Like it or leave!!!!
Thank you for posting, Mark. You know what’s stupid? Most kids will quiz other kids with respect to what they bring for lunch. I have called other Moms when one of my kids said, “they ate something that smelled so good!” or was offered a small sample to try. I have gotten calls from parents (originally NOT from this country) and wrote out my tuna casserole recipe or where to purchase pierogies. Food, IMHO, is enjoyed by every type of group imagined. Instead of this teacher putting a ugly term like “racist” on a simple (and economical sandwich), she should just let eating alone. The kids will discover other cultural cuisines by doing what comes natural: being inquisitive and wanting to try/question/sample something that smells appealing.
I wonder if a common US Citizen raised in the mid-West - went to Japan and started talking about how offensive their food was and that they needed to be more culturally aware...and that food items like “Sashimi” - and basically being rude in a country with established practices when serving food that they have been eating...most to a majority of people that visit Japan or live - adapt to their culture and become aware of food items - what to eat - and what not to...
The BP&J is a traditional sandwich that been around at least since the 50’s...I grew up on them - hell, just had one 4 days ago for lunch...but the point is...you want to come to the US - then learn and appreciate what the US is now and stop this BS attempt at transforming it into every other culture that comes here legally or illegally!
Articles like these are for emotional response or they show the stupidity of those with the authority to make decisions that will affect us all in negative ways...
I wonder if Italy has been offended due to the Pizza Pie being associated with their country - but did not originate there???
She is a Mexican now running an American school naturally she wants a Mexican “comfort zone!” Only a white American is so stupid so as to fail to realize we are rapidly becoming a conquered people. It follows that as a conquered people we will experience poverty, insult, assault, etc. at the hands of the Third World conquerors. You have all seen this type of behavior before and refuse to fight as a result such alien behavior will continue.

Oh, for gosh sakes. Those kids are in this country and it’s time they learned the ways of the U.S. The teachers should show a picture of the sandwich, thus educating the kids about the American way. If their parents don’t want to learn about the U.S. they shouldn’t be here in the first place.
Peanuts are a staple of the poor. The black genius George Washington Carver invented peanut butter to help feed the poor of this country. In Africa, the poor survive on what they call “ground nuts,” being peanuts.
To discriminate against items containing peanut butter is blatant discrimination against poor people.
Hah, when’s the last time you’ve heard George Washington Carver’s name brought up during Black History month?
Junk our culture. The invaders have won.
Not everyone eats tacos either. So tacos are racist. As are pizzas, chow mein, french fries, hot dogs and apple pie. Liberals are idiots.

HE is entirely too stupid to be in charge of kindergarten children. Send his stupid a$$ packing.
Its brain pan has a mighty big dent.
Ah gee. To say peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are racist; you have to be a racist and a dumb one at that.
Something must be in the water in Portland.
Let it begin then.
No it’s not. Racism would be to take the peanut butter sandwich and smash it into your hispanic face yelling your a taco eater. That’s racist. Don’t listen to anything the losers on the left have to say. Nothing.
So what’s the status of dog sandwiches? We know that our racist president is on board with that.
