I dont sweat the big things, Im sure there are a million articles on them already and you have read them all, but I hope there are a few little things here that will give you food for though, and that might just save your life some day.

You like eggs? Well fresh eggs keep 6-9 months unrefrigerated if they aren't washed. Great protein and cheap.
Hang smoked meat in the shed and it will keep for a long time.
While on vacation in Spain and Italy, wife and I skipped a meal a day (usually breakfast, as that is not something they do over there) and a light meal either lunch or dinner. We did it to save some money for other things; but, guess what, it wasn’t so hard going from three to two meals a day.
OK, in a SHTF scenario, it may be more difficult because of stress and the need for more carbs to do things. However, with planning, it can be done.
I have thought about taking that training, or at least the red cross cpr class etc. Don’t really have a lot of time. I probably need to get the books and read them several times before taking any training to make sure that I can remember enough to pass the tests.
In addition to the camp showers, for those cloudy cooler days, stock up on those bath wipe packs like they have in hospitals. They are nice when you don’t have anything else. You could even put them in a bit of hotwater and it’s even better.
If it's just 365 cans of soup, he is right. If it's 365 cans of 30 different soups, and you add one a day to a pound of rice, a pound of pasta, as a sauce on top of a pound of flour turned into pancakes, etc, it's not a bad source of variety and small amounts of veggies. That's not my only meal plan, but it's part of my plan, and I think its a good one.
Note: I also have a year's supply of multivitamins and a significant supply of dietary fiber (Metamucil equivalent). Variety? I plan to supplement with squirrel and rabbit. More variety? I have proportional amounts of the 30 year storage cans of LDS food, including grains, and I use at least one can a month, so we know how to cook with them. More? I have Spam, canned tuna, sardines, and canned chicken, plus canned beef stew, canned chili con carne, and a month's supply of MREs with the little heater packs.
“...fresh eggs keep 6-9 months unrefrigerated if they aren’t washed.”
I take it you mean straight from the chicken eggs. Why do people wash them and why does that affect (effect? not sure this time) their longevity?
My hippie friend actually raised chickens at one point, so I guess I had some of those eggs. She tells me she’s a real prepper now, even though she’s a big lib. (I mean volvo with gaia bumper stickers - literally!) She says she knows most preppers are right wingers, but that doesn’t bother her. I don’t know if she’s still got chickens.
“...in a SHTF scenario, it may be more difficult because of stress and the need for more carbs to do things.”
That reminds me of an article I read which was basically about people who had starved to death in the wilderness. They just could not get sufficient nutrition, esp. in Alaska in the dead of winter.
I was surprised at how many calories they said you’d need in that kind of “roughing it” situation. I think for a man they said 3500 calories a day, I think normally it’s about 2500.
Rules to live by.
Double your water preps.
“Little” should have been considered more in the length of it. Gave up after too much blathering. Get to the point.
They have a coating on them from the chicken called the bloom that seals the pores in the shell.
They should be treated with mineral oil or use the water glass method though I know some old timers that don't. Just do a search on preserving fresh eggs. Use the water bowl test.
Thanks, very interesting.
“We have a fire pit in the middle of some huge rocks in the back yard that we can sit on.”
You and I are interesting because we have the same thoughts to do something and we do it different ways. I am in town and have the small back garden so I can’t dig a pit. What I did is buy an outdoor fireplace. It has a drawer to put wood or charcoal in and a grill above that to cook on or take the grill out and burn trash. I got it to be able to burn trash if the SHTF. I would call mine thinking of the little stuff like the article suggests - be able to burn trash in town - how many have thought of that?
“I do think sometimes food cravings are related to missing nutrients.”
I agree with what you said above. One time, my husband had double pneumonia and barely lived through it. When he came home, I cut up veggies and baked them together and he woofed it down and kept eating it all day. Then, he wanted only salad and ate it all day long. He didn’t have a craving for meat right away, it was veggies and salad. He was a big meat eater, but after this illness, it took a while for him to want meat. I thought at the time, his body was asking for those foods.
“In addition to the camp showers, for those cloudy cooler days, stock up on those bath wipe packs like they have in hospitals.”
If you recall, I bought enough wet wipes instead of toilet paper, to last a year for four people. I don’t expect to have four people here if TSHTF, and those wet wipes are large and would clean your body. I don’t have enough room in this townhouse to store huge amounts of toilet paper but the wet wipes are in two medium size boxes, easy to store anywhere.
You have a good food plan.
When we went to the field we took the older C-rations. I would always take a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce to enhance the flavor. That also worked when we had K's at the Mess Hall.
Perhaps - but should you drink water from it? China plastic?
“Just do a search on preserving fresh eggs.”
Sir Francis Chichester, when he did his round the world single-handed sail in Gypsy Moth IV took waxed eggs with him...just good ole paraffin wax.
He must have liked eggs as much as I do. I love them. There have been many days when I’ve had eggs at 3 meals.
Yeah, my cholesterol was high when last checked, but my “good” cholesterol was high too.
