So heres the deal: since 1993 there has been a federal law requiring states to recover at least some of the costs of Medicaid-covered medical care for anyone 55 years old and up, from the estates of those covered. States enforce this law, with their own laws and policies added in, differently in every state. But the general principle is there. Up until now the usual consequence has been things like this: Medicaid puts a lien on the house of someone in a nursing facility who has run out of money, and after they die, the heirs find they have to buy the house back from the state if they want it.
We havent had lots of people younger than 65 on Medicaid, because in most states simply earning less than the Federal Poverty Level did not qualify one for Medicaid.
And we havent had many people with lots of assets on Medicaid, because in most places you have to have less than around $2400 to your name before Medicaid will cover you. You can keep your house and your car, but Medicaid reserves the right to put liens on them and take them when you die.
But now we have the Affordable Care Act, and its expectation that everyone in the lower tier of income will end up in the Medicaid system. To accomplish this, they have dropped the asset test. So now we will have lots of people ages 55-64, who have assets but not a lot of income right now, for whatever reason, on Medicaid.
The kicker of it is, if you make the right amount to qualify for a subsidized health insurance plan, your costs are going to be shared and subsidized by the government. But if you go on Medicaid, you owe the entire amount that Medicaid spends on you from the day you turn 55.
This is actually the thread I meant to link:
The link in #77 is Part 2.
I have said continuously that Obamacare is a wealth plundering tool for the medical industrial complex. A way to unlock assets for the corporate/government interests.
thats spend down to qualify for medicaid, thats not the same as seizng your house to pay after the fact

Title apparently should have read “Medicaid”, not “Medicare” - Medicare is a totally federal program, while Medicaid is a shared state-federal program which is what gives the states the leverage to engage in the practices described in the article.....
Okay. Then she hasn’t run, and she hasn’t been drafted. And the last time she had a job, she quit.
Yes it is Medicaid.
Do you really want to go there?
Breitbart, about three weeks before his death: Those in the GOP who didn't defend Sarah Palin when she was savaged by the media and the democrats were eunuchs. Those that took part in the savaging were nothing better than animals without souls.....
Which is it, Medicare or Medicaid?
The original post asked why she isn’t in a leadership position. I responded in not so elegant language that she WAS in a leadership position. I was responding to the query.
I don't know what it's going to take to purge this leftist meme from Free Republic once and for all.
Maybe JimRob should put up a vanity post setting the record straight. Maybe he could also lay down the law about posting this disgusting slander on his website. Perhaps that would finally do the trick.
In the meantime, for those who've swallowed this left-wing agitprop, let me recommend Sarah's book, "Going Rogue". In it, she details the entire episode leading up to her decision to resign from office. Any decent conservative who reads that and comes away still believing the "quitter" lie, has got their head on backwards, and should probably join DU.
Breitbart hit the nail on the head perfectly.
What word would you use?
So you’ve been here about four years and have NO IDEA why the most stalwart and popular conservative woman in the United States had to leave her position in Alaska? Really?
Oh so we’re playing that game huh? Looking up how long I’ve been here? Checking my creds?
I know exactly why she left. The point is... she resigned. Which is another word for quit. Now I’m asking you, what word would you use for it?
When she stepped down as governor, she said she had a plan to take the fight to the left nationally, and she's done that in spades. She's been one of the few to consistently speak out against Bambi and his minions, she's gotten people like Cruz elected (yes, Ted Cruz credits HER), helped galvanize the conservatives in congress many times, she's a major force to be reckoned with.
And people like you repeat the savagery of the left for what reason? Like I said, you're a perfect example of why Breitbart was so right.
Your born-on date is in your profile, as is mine and everybody else’s, even the site owner’s. I’m not going to justify Governor Palin’s actions to anyone willfully ignorant enough not to have done 10 minutes of research on the subject. We’ve been over and over this, for years, and I tire of it.
