Vanity-Home Invasion
10-3-13 | self

Posted on 10/04/2013 9:21:23 AM PDT by riri

Yesterday as I was doing some work and surfing Free Republic, I got a knock on the door. I never answer the door when home alone and didn't yesterday.

I didn't think much of it initially as we get a lot of solicitors, Jehovah Witnesses, etc.

The individual kept knocking rather aggressively and ringing the bell. I looked out a side window and saw a car. Because there can sometimes be lawsuits at my husband's company, my immediate thought was that perhaps he was receiving a summons for a court case that needed his testimony. While this has never happened before I know it is a possibility.

So, while unnerved, I just thought it was an overly aggressive summons server. I was getting a little rattled but no much. I live in a very nice, quite area which is predominately Mormon. I generally feel pretty safe here. Especially at 10:30 am.

I was home with my teenage daughter at the time. Normally, my husband works from home, right near the front door with a firearm.

My daughter and I went to look at the car again when we heard an enormous bang--sounded like the whole front of the house caved in.

We locked ourselves in the front room, locked the door and jumped out the front window. We ran down the street and called 9.11. About ten minutes later we could see four young, hispanic(ish) youths making out the door with our computers, etc.

9.11 actually put me on hold for three minutes or so. They were able to catch them though before they made it out of our subdivision because they got lost.

The officer that came by today said it was purely random. They tried a house around the corner and the door didn't give as easily so they moved on.

We were extremely lucky in that we made it out of the house. I was extremely stupid for not assuming the worst and getting to a firearm, at least, and not calling 9/11 the minute any radar went off.

The officers said this is a common tactic and sometimes if you answer they will make up a story and go away. Sometimes they will force their way in.

Just thought I would share this with Freepers, especially you women who might find yourselves at home alone. Be armed, be prepared and be vigilant. Our society is falling apart.

Since you're a cop, I'd like to throw a question out to you.

There are some folks out there who (for whatever reason) can't, or won't, use a firearm.

What is your opinion on pepper spray as a better-than-nothing alternative? And what brands do you recommend? Why?

Thanks.

Glad you are all ok.

HOWEVER!!!

Since dear old hubby was NOT home, why did YOU not have YOUR OWN FIREARM at the ready to blast those thugs, instead of retreating????

Are YOU the one that picks up the firearm and goes “ewee”?

Sure, you and your child have your life, but now, those thugs can communicate with other incarcerated thugs, that your neighborhood can be hit, without personal injury.

Better not to let them get in, in the first place. Have the gun as last resort, but get your door, hinges, and jambs reinforced so YOU are the one bypassed, as they go on to easier homes.

Same thing happened to my neighbor a few months ago! Same tactic, except she finally went to door to confront them after they started banging on front and back door. They came running around from back of house and jumped in car....firing off a shot at her!! Very unnerving. Police did not even include the gun incident in police report. I actually called them asking why not and what happened and they said gun fire was not reported because they never found the bullet...only the shell casings!! I was stunned.

Their advice was to always answer door...lol. Glad you are ok!!

See post #24. Even if they finally do break in, which is doubtful, the stronger door gives you the time to get your gun.

In February of last year this happened 3 doors down from us, in broad daylight. People came home from work and their kitchen door had been kicked in. Later that night about 10:00 the burglars came back, kicked in the front door and proceeded up the stairs and tried to get in the master bedroom door while the people were in there. Scared the bejeezus out of them.
We have an alarm system but after that incident we put iron gates across our arch that leads through the front courtyard to our front door. Keep them locked at all times now. Noone gets in unless we know they are coming. We live in a nice, quiet neighborhood buyt crap is happening everywhere in our city now.
Glad you and the daughter are okay!!!

I think one needs to carry their phone with them all over the house, if you have one

Good suggestion. And, at any age, look into one of those medical alert buttons. They can also be thought of as crime alert buttons and fire alert buttons.

They usually don’t have the patience to get in the windows, kicking in the door is their favorite way — most door jambs are very weak.

That is insane. Why did they kick the kitchen door in and then come back later through the front? Did they catch them?

Apparently you missed that. ;)

I don’t normally resort to debased words, but in this case:

Hell, damn, and f***!

Further proof of what America has been “fundamentally transformed” into.

Riri, I hope you take Factor’s remarks to heart.

No, while I am not completely at ease with a gun (because I think I am forgetful) I would put a bullet right through someone's head who came near my kids. I wouldn't even think twice. I would consider it a good day's work.

But, you are right, in that, I was complacent.

No clue why. They just figured there was something in that bedroom that they came back for later. And no, they didn’t catch them. Our police are so overloaded that they don’t even look for them. Best friend that lives down the street was burglarized about 3 yrs ago and the police wouldn’t even come out and take a report. She filled it out online and the only reason they do that is because a report is required by the insurance companies.

I live in a rural area that is a wonderful place... and I carry a .45 on me at all times... inside or out.

I have to say out police department was exceptional. (minus the 9.11 call)

This morning a different officer all together went and retraced what he expected were their routes and found my purse and returned it to me.

They had 9 cop cars at the scene in no time at all.
