Vietnamese called on to quit eating dog meat amid rabies outbreak

Authorities in an outlying Hanoi district have set up special taskforces to hunt and catch and kill stray dogs after at least 117 people were bitten by those infected with rabies.

Nguyen Thi Cam, a resident in Soc Son District’s Bac Son Commune, said a stray dog, possibly from a nearby province, wandered by her house, attacking her five-year-old granddaughter on June 29.

“I chased it away with a stick. But it returned several hours later and bit three other people before running away,” she said.

“It looked like a mad dog with red eyes. Its hair stood up on end and it was drooling saliva.”

Following increasing reports of dogs with rabies in Soc Son District over the past several months, experts have called for improving vaccination coverage, controlling the illegal dog trade and gradually banning the trade of dogs for meat to eliminate the transmission of rabies to humans.

But in light of a recent outbreak there, many experts doubt that Vietnam will meet its target of eliminating rabies by 2020 set earlier this year by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In recent weeks, dozens of people have been bitten by stray dogs in Soc Son, which is adjacent to Thai Nguyen Province’s Pho Yen District. Many of the dogs have tested positive for rabies.

The dog wasn’t just mad....it was pissed. They’re eating his family and friends.

That is a phenomenon of relative prosperity. Just a dozen years ago actual stray dogs were rare to nonexistent. Dogs for the table were raised in confinement and any loose dogs were killed because chickens roamed free in the smaller towns and in the outskirts of the cities. For a few years as many people became more prosperous and started keeping dogs in their yards and others roamed, I wondered about the incidence of rabies but heard nothing of it.

The dogs that roamed the villages were by necessity vegetarians because a dog seen paying inordinate attention to a chicken was summarily dealt with by whoever was around. The dogs were fed rice and stayed skinny. In the last few years rabies has, indeed, become a problem. It was always there in the forest but now it comes to town. Chickens are required now to be fenced in and dogs are getting table scraps, meat even. I think that makes a difference in the rabies incidence because they chase wild critters now and get bitten themselves where previously they were not interested in meat things.

Wild dogs do not go into the pot because wild dogs are meat eaters. Table dogs are raised on rice and vegetables and are kept confined as befits culinary livestock. The poorest of the poor might be tempted by the strays, though. For them eating is very expensive and they get what free food is available.

The first refugees to America were amazed that we let livestock run free and did round up some of the stray dogs. They stopped doing that quickly, though, because American dogs taste really foul. They are all meat eaters. They also learned that Americans do not eat dog and the Vietnamese emigres wanted to be American more than anything else. Most of the Vietnamese in Việt Nam do not partake and it is because Americans frown on it. Dog is really only available now in obscure cafés that cater to old folks. I think it is easier to find in South Korea. It is not available in North Korea because all the catchable wildlife has been consumed already.

My springer spaniels are convinced that they are retrievers: Bacon Retrievers.

Today, however, Eli, the older one, hunted and pounced on a rabbit in the lantana bush by the back door. Suburban jungle rambo dog.

Good. Let the human garbage catch rabies and eliminate them from the gene pool. They are disgusting.

I’m sure his dog meat is only the finest. Nothing but the best dogs for the Obama table.

Very sad. Rabies spreads quickly in hot and humid places.
