al-Qaeda "decimated?" So much for Obama's fairy tail

The war in Afghanistan may be winding down. But the Pentagon’s chief of irregular warfare still sees a war against al-Qaida that will last decades, all over the world -- a prospect that prompted astonishment and constitutional debate in the Senate. ...

- Wired.com, 5/16/2013

Two Islamist brothers terrorized Boston for days in April. Just a few days ago Fazliddin Kurbanov was charged in Boise, Idaho with "conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists," according to the Idaho Statesman. The FBI itself said that:

... The Idaho indictment alleges in count one that between August 2012 and May 2013, Kurbanov knowingly conspired with unnamed co-conspirators to provide material support and resources to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a designated foreign terrorist organization. The indictment alleges that the material support and resources included himself, computer software and money.

In count two, the indictment further alleges that the defendant conspired to provide material support and resources, including himself, to terrorists knowing that the material support was to be used in preparation for and in carrying out an offense involving the use of a weapon of mass destruction. ...

Then we find that "Pentagon Spec Ops Chief Sees '10 to 20' More Years of War Against al-Qaida", also just a few days ago:

... Asked at a Senate hearing today how long the war on terrorism will last, Michael Sheehan, the assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low-intensity conflict, answered, "At least 10 to 20 years." ...

... Pentagon officials also said that they saw "a tipping point" whereby al-Qaida is defeated. When that happens, the officials testified, the armed conflict against al-Qaida will end. ("That day, unfortunately, is a long way off," Sheehan said.) ...

On November 1, 2012, CNSNews.com reported that:

President Barack Obama has described al Qaeda as having been 'decimated,' 'on the path to defeat' or some other variation at least 32 times since the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, according to White House transcripts. ...

How many times has he reiterated this fairy tale? Peter Foster, US Editor for The Telegraph, wrote an article on April 19, 2013 entitled "Boston bombs: Barack Obama lulled America into false confidence over terror threat." He surmised:

In his State of the Union address to the American people earlier this year, Barack Obama declared that he was "confident" of achieving "our objective of defeating the core of al-Qaeda".

Although he acknowledged the need to pursue the "remnants" of the terrorist group and its affiliates, the overall message was clear -- al-Qaeda was badly degraded, the tides of war were receding and the US was winning this fight that was no longer even officially a war.

The Boston bombings would appear to present a fundamental challenge to that assessment and once again bring the nagging uncertainty of terrorism back on to the American main street. ...

They bring home the complexity of the global Islamist threat and the fact that it cannot be confined to wars in distant lands, or fought at arm's length using drones, as the Obama administration has quietly yet insistently led America to believe.

Mr Obama and his intelligence community know the threat from al-Qaeda affiliates, but have chosen to downplay it to the US public. ...

But as many counter-terrorism experts have been saying – their voices often drowned out or ignored in favour of the pleasing simplicity of the Obama administration's narrative -- the threat from al-Qaeda is too amorphous and shifting to ever have been discounted. ...

Wake up Mr. Obama. Your propaganda of minimizing the Islamist terrorist threat is a fairy tale. Stop misleading the American people.

We’ve got 1.5 billion muslims to go before I start using the phrase “Al-Qaida Decimated”.

If al-Qaeda has been “decimated,” that means that it has only been reduced by 10 percent, and that the other 90 percent is intact.

Fine. Go ahead and use words consistently with their meanings, Fiji Hill. The vast majority of illiterates on the internet still think "decimate" means to slaughter all or nearly all the enemy, and you're never going to change their minds. How's it feel to be a scorned minority?

It's going to get worse, not better.

I get so aggravated by that as well. Had a coworker once say that the after-effect of a situation on the production floor “decimated the equipment”.

I said, “it was reduced by 10%?”

He replied, “What do you mean? It doesn’t work at all!!”

I tried explaining what the word actually means, using ‘deci’ as the prefix, etc. His exasperated last comment was, “Well if Deci means 10, then why is December the 12th month??”

**sigh**

We’re living in what is called the Information Age, but it seems that a lot of people these days have low information.
