After 46 years the Texas Tower sniper killings still raises important questions.

On August 1, 1966 Charles Whitman a 25 year old former Marine and college student started his day by killing his mother and wife.

He then packed up a variety of guns and a large quantity of ammunition and drove to the University of Texas Austin campus took the elevator to the top floor and began to shoot people as they walked by 28 floors below.

When he was finished he had murdered 17 including an unborn child and injured another 32 innocent people. For 1 hour and 45 minutes Whitman kept killing until he was gunned down by two brave Austin Police officers.

According to reports armed civilians arrived at the scene and helped the police by concentrating suppressing fire at Whitman. This kept his head down likely saved lives until the police could get up to the observation deck and kill Whitman.

Armed citizens acting in the truest spirit of the Second Amendment helped the police stop a killing rampage in 1966 Austin Texas. Is there any chance this could happen today?

Can anyone deny that if this were to happen today the police would video tape the civilians and arrest them after “talking” Whitman down?

Whitman did four years Marine Corps. He spent 18 months at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina in the early 1960s. The government has admitted that during the same period those who were stationed at Camp Lejeune were exposed to several very dangerous chemicals in the drinking water provided to them.

Some of those who were exposed to these chemicals are now suffering from fifteen acknowledged maladies including various cancers. Among the dangerous chemicals was vinyl chloride which is linked to cancerous brain tumors…

Look how much the Second Amendment has already slipped in 46 years. The Camp Lejeune water project need attention.

It would not escalate to the point where civilians would be shooting alongside the police. That’s why they have swat teams and special response teams.

There was a rumor, About a tumor
Nestled at the base of his brain
He was sitting up there with a .44 Magnum
Laughin’ wildly as he bagged ‘em
Who are we to say the boy’s insane?

I was OK with the 2nd amendment angle. Lost me at the Camp Lejeune drinking water stage.

That's one of the dirty little secrets that FReepers try to avoid thinking about. While they squeal about police trampling rights, the posses of old did pretty much the same thing including on the spot executions without benefit of trial It wasn't unusual to burn down houses and barns to get at a suspect.

I personally think it the best option is somewhere in between with a handful of armed cops leading groups of armed citizens. I also don't have any expectation of perfection.

Is there any chance this could happen today?

Not much, as most cowards select “gun free zones”.

Hmmmm I wonder when they stopped putting all that stuff in the water? I was there after Boot Camp at PI in late 1969 for my ITR training. I also lived there as a tenth grader when my Father was stationed there in 1963. Should I be worried? I like the few weapons I own, is this wrong? I was also in Viet Nam. Gees I guess I am on some kind of Holder’s or Nappy’s list instead of hundreds of thousands of mohammedans!

Whitman’s autopsy showed he a glioblastoma brain tumor the size of a pecan. Was big enough to alter his behavior?
Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of men and women were stationed at Camp Lejeune during the time of the contamination (1953-1985) without a problem ... including me.
Yet, this guy wants us to believe that the contaminated water turned (only) one guy into a physco-killer? That's a real stretch.

I watched the tv coverage of the Tower shootings from the safety of my dorm room in Houston and I don’t recall the participation of civilians, but that was a long time ago. However, most of the pickups in Texas at that time sported a gun rack so I don’t have a problem believing the report.

I watched the live feed from Austin via the San Antonio stations while I was living in Del Rio. Armed citizens on campus were a regular sight on both colleges and high schools.

***Whitman’s autopsy showed he a glioblastoma brain tumor the size of a pecan. Was big enough to alter his behavior?***

In a TV movie of this, broadcast about 1970, it has a pro-gun statement followed by an anti gun statement.

Then at the end of the movie there was a voiceover telling about the tumor.
That voiceover then had a louder voiceover, drowning out the first voiceover, telling the audience to watch some other show on NBC.

It is as if NBC did not want the audience to know about the tumor.

I vividly remember the shooting because I enlisted in the Marine Corps less than a week after it happened.
At the time, I wondered how anyone could shoot with such accuracy not knowing I'd be able to do just that a few months later.
I remember the movie too, starring Kurt Russell - 1975 ...
