That's one of the dirty little secrets that FReepers try to avoid thinking about. While they squeal about police trampling rights, the posses of old did pretty much the same thing including on the spot executions without benefit of trial It wasn't unusual to burn down houses and barns to get at a suspect.

I personally think it the best option is somewhere in between with a handful of armed cops leading groups of armed citizens. I also don't have any expectation of perfection.
