Boston lockdown: The new normal?
The Politico ^ | April 20, 2013 | Josh Gerstein and Darren Samuelsohn

Posted on 04/20/2013 1:15:39 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The unprecedented manhunt in Boston that concluded successfully Friday night earned law enforcement authorities the gratitude of the nation.

But as relief replaces fear, the debate about what this episode means for the future is already beginning. And one of the most unsettling questions is whether the violence-related lockdown of a major U.S. city — an extraordinary moment in American history — sets a life-altering precedent.

There are already worries that the effort to protect the people of Boston contained an element of overreaction. Local authorities told the city and nearby suburbs to “shelter in place” throughout the day and into the evening. They closed businesses, shuttered government buildings and suspended all public transportation in the metro area.

That decision concerned some political leaders and policy experts.

Former Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) said it is “hard to imagine what could justify directing the entire population of the city to ‘shelter in place.’”

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, stopped short of directly criticizing the decision, but he lamented the development as a win of sorts for terrorists....

I know just what you mean. Here in FL, we have UPS backups for the cel towers, so that it runs even when a hurricane makes landfall.

The source I spoke to yesterday, point-blank said the cel towers went down with the power. If so, that was a deliberate act. Why cut the network? People could be calling 9-1-1 with sightings of the terrorist, and they couldn’t make the calls. No logic.

Martial law is a big deal to me.

To be honest with you, when I first read this, I didn’t question anything that Boston did. However, as I read down some of the comments, it could be questionable. Although luckily the Governor said he suggests they stay in the house. It is a slippery slope but as long as they never demand staying in shelter in place, it should be ok....

Never was there a better fully illustrated reasoning to be self-equipped for personal safety. Of course a gun is an essential ingredient, but not the only weapon and shield for this time of the new normal. As Americans, we tend to look over the heads of the spectators to also view the race, paying no attention to what threats lie within the 20 foot diameter of our immediate surroundings...and we would not notice the backpack casually laid at out feet. Just deciphering the odds, it would not happen to us...and the odds do prove a very slight chance of this happening to you. But that is not a reason to continue not paying attention. Our focus must change, and we must refocus on threats nearby, watch the race, but to our visuals, scan the immediate area frequently and often...like a pilot continually scamming hisnaircraft’a gauges for threats. The New Normal is here...it has been here for some time regardless of the politicians words. And we know we can expect more. The authorities are efficient at catching people who create the havoc...but they are incapable of preventing it...that will always be left to us.

Just how far down this road are we going to drive before we hit the brakes?

Here's the thing: I see two ways out of this (and really -- I see one way out):

1) American citizens could vote better and decide that Limited Government is a good idea, that social programs should be cut back, and the government should be half the size it is now.

2) Patriots act like it's 1775 and rise up. But you know what? Action like that will necessarily start to look a little like Boston on April 15 2013. It won't be pretty and it won't be clean.

We're going to have to make hard choices.

Next time you can size it down by using:

<img src=&qt;http://www.whatever.com/mypic.jpg" width=500 height=300>

You can use height= or width= or both but I suggest only one to keep the original proportion. 500 or so is a nice general width and 300 or so is a nice height

Your pic, resized to 500 high:

I used:

<img src="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BIPF_x7CAAAzDxZ.jpg:large" height=400>

Note: this works even if sizing is embedded in he URL

Wasn’t martial law imposed to quell the race riots of the 1960’s?

ConservativeInPA ~:” What I found most ironic about yesterday’s sheltering in place is that minutes after it was lifted,
a citizen, not the authorities, discovered terrorist #2.”

Debriefing Information:
#1) He was found after the lock down had lapsed and citizens were free to exit their homes.
#2) Possible signs of his presence were noted by a citizen , not police
Police had locked down a 20 block area
#3) And he was found OUTSIDE the area that they had in lock-down !
as they had already searched that area, and was now outside their search perimeter.
#4){a} which means he was able to travel to the boat location, OR,
{b}there was an inadequate initial search .

It would have been interesting if someone had resisted the police search without a warrant.
Civil or criminal proceedings ?

And they bitch about Black Guns? Look at this BS happening on American streets.
Who the hell should be afraid of whom? I WILL NOT COMPLY! And you can kiss my Ass!

I think of the British marching down the streets and taking over homes.
And beating anybody they don't like. Try walking down the street and looking
at an officer the wrong way, and you'll find out these days.

This is not the police, these are MILITARY. I don't give a F which ID they carry!

ACTIVE pursuit of armed and deangerous TERRORISTS that had already set off two bombs...shot a cop...engaged in a high speed pursuit while lobbing pipe bombs out the window...
I listened to the boston scanners all night...they werent “systematiclly” searching houses...they were knocking...doing quick looks...checking on residents...and clearing back yards looking for armed terrorist on the run and making sure he hadnt taken anyone hostage...
And since when do we take shit that democrats say seriously ANYWAYS???

Finally, someone who has some damn sense. Some of the residents wanted officers to do a full search including garages, roofs, sheds in the backyard that the resident was afraid to approach, officers obliged. As for the "shelter in place" - it was not an "order" - it was not marshal law, it was a suggestion - contrary to what others are saying - people made up their own minds about whether or not they wanted to roam around the neighborhood and meet up with "just a 19 year old college kid" who proved to be anything but, he was a proven terrorist, a wounded, bleeding, tired, hungry, frightened terrorist who had God knows how many rounds of ammunition and pipe bombs on his person. Most people chose to stay inside.
