The closure of local towers and airports may seem like a recent event, but sadly it's been going on for a while.

What a thuggish abuse of power. He never even explained why. At the news conference he stated yelling that maybe he wanted to build a hotdog stand.

Back in the day I flew in and out of Meigs Field many times. Best part of a trip to Chicago... the airport was right downtown. Very convenient.

I used to fly a King Air 200 in and out of there 3 days a week during the 1990's.
It was a damn waste of a good field for one thing........Dailey's wife hated the aircraft disturbing the yacht club.
I'm still pissed over it.

Fairfax County VA had a dozen or more major airfields during WWII. The aircapacity for D-Day was actually checked out and loaded up for the most part right here ~ near where I live. There was flat ground and they used it as a D-mark for the greatest land/sea invasion in human history.
Now we only have the 'remains' ~ a few records ~ not even historic markers ~ and a newer field at Fort Belvoir. Fortunately there's an historic society that's busy with the task of identifying all of them and make these things known.
Note, not all Alexandria addresses are in Alexandria. A large part of Southern Fairfax uses Alexandria post office.
There's a good selection of these incredibly important airfields at: http://members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/VA/Airfields_VA_Fairfax_SE.html

The local tower is on the list for closure, but as long as the obama girls aren't affected by the budget woes and are having a good time, it'll be worth it.
My first long cross country with an instructor was to Meigs Field. I think I was 17, amazed by the entire trip and way behind the airplane. On the way back I forgot to switch tanks and never noticed, which ended up being good for a lot more instruction than I had planned on.
Hard to believe I survived my stupidity from one day to the next back then. Now I'm more worried about our surviving our elected officials and their agenda for us.

Have they done anything with that property to make as much if not more than the field brought in with revenue?
