Republican strategist Karl Rove told George Stephanopoulos on ABCs This Week that he thinks Republican presidential candidates in 2016 could be supporters of marriage equality. Rove my the comments during a discussion on the Supreme Courts hearing on a challenge to Californias Proposition 8 schedule for later this week.
Karl Rove, can you imagine the next presidential campaign a Republican candidate saying flat out I am for gay marriage, asked Stephanopoulos.
I could, said Rove, before turning the discussion back to the Supreme Courts hearing on the issue.
Rove said that he thinks some Supreme Court Justices have expressed sentiments in the past that wide reaching decisions on social issues, like Rove vs. Wade, went too far and that its possible the court could avoid a repeat of that. Theres a possibility, he thinks, that court wants to avoid setting a national standard on the issue of gay marriage like it did on abortion and instead leave it up to the states to decided how to proceed.
What we may see is a decision here that in essence has, not a 5-4 decision, but a 6-3, 7-2, that says leave it up to the states, in fact we could see an 8-1, said Rove.

And, sadly, I can see that as well. The GOP is dead to me.
Tokyo Rove’s stepfather was gay. Not a surprise.
May I go sadly to my grave and NEVER endorse same sex Holy Matrimony. Tis the foundation of the whole human race, one man, one wife, and family. End.
And this is why I could imagine the GOP losing it all in 2016. Supporting “gay marriage” will not get them one stinking vote just as supporting “amnesty” will not get them one illegal alien vote.
I could see Chris Christie supporting gay marriage in 2016 and then getting throttled by Hillary in the presidential election.
Rove, Putting it another way....I can see where the democrats will control the presidency from this day forward.....
To the headline: I am sure you could.
And losing to Obama running for an illegal 3rd term with a Muslim VP.
Rove’s twin, Romney, created it. Duh.
I said it during the last campaign. We shouldn’t be surprised if we’re less than a decade from an openly gay GOP presidential candidate.
Chris Christie is a one man couple....
I think the next few elections are going to be interesting — the GOP no longer has a base at all. They hope to win by getting 90% of the undecided voters to come over to the GOP and counter the 100% of the Democrat voters who smell blood in the water. I anticipate severe losses by Republican candidates.
That’s an “Interesting” picture! Ugh.
I’ll slit my own throat before I ever give a vote to any candidate showing even the slightest equivocation in favor of homo marriage.
Watch... Sean Hannity soon will endorse Homosexual Marriage... and bring on Rove to talk about it
The GOPe go out of their way to antagonize and provoke conservatives. What in the hell do they think they are going to gain with this behavior?
I can imagine such candidates losing too, Karl.
It’s what the GOP does best after all.
Tokyo Rove knows that Roberts is gay and the fix is in again with the Supreme court.
I think the game here is to get liberals to come out and destroy conservatives for him by voting for liberal “republicans” in the primaries. Then the conservative candidates are out of the way of the GOPe.
I call him Kapo Karl for a reason.
